BBL: Are the Knicks interested in John Calipari?

Some morning notes and Big Blue Links:

- Here we go again. Peter Vecsey of the New York Post claims that the New York Knicks are interested in John Calipari as coach and GM. I thought Cal was going to take his talents to South Beach and try and keep LeBron’s mom out of trouble. Or maybe he was succeeding the retiring Phil Jackson with the Lakers. Or . . .

- Alabama prep star and Kentucky target Trevor Lacey says reports that he’s down to Kentucky and Alabama and will announce soon are incorrect. Kansas is visiting the scoring machine today.

- Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger writes on the versatility of Kyle Wiltjer. The Kentucky signee is playing in this weekend’s Nike Hoops Summit on Saturday. Fox Sports South is scheduled to show the game, starting at 11 p.m. Michael Gilchrist and Marquis Teague are also playing in the game. Click here for the rosters.

- Meanwhile, could Duke be getting DeAndre Daniels?

BBL: Walker’s comeback; Polson, Lacey, Dawson

Big Blue Links for Thursday:

Ken Berger of CBS Sports: “To the business types and families crammed in this vessel with a former NBA All-Star, the only priorities were a palatable meal and a clean connection. The tall, athletic-looking man in his mid-30s could have passed for a neighbor or a youth basketball coach or just another traveler coping with the misery of the road. The only giveaway — the lone symbol of Antoine Walker’s long and accomplished NBA career — was worn on his head.” (Hat tip All Ky Hoops)

Jerry Tipton of the Herald-Leader: “Of course, freshman Jarrod Polson was nervous when Kentucky Coach John Calipari ordered him into the game at South Carolina last weekend. It was the first significant minutes for a player perceived to be a human victory cigar. Nothing more. ‘Yeah, a little bit,’ he said Wednesday. ‘I’m not going to lie. I was a little bit nervous. But at the same time, I tried to keep my composure.’”

Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger: “Forget about the winning lottery numbers or even when it might quit snowing. Those answers don’t matter. What matters is this – where is Boyle County linebacker Lamar Dawson going to play his college football? Dawson has less than a week now before his 9 a.m. press conference on Feb. 2 – the first day of the national signing period – when he’ll pick either Kentucky, Tennessee, Oregon, Southern California or Central Florida.”

Matt Dover of Roll Bama Roll: “The second uncommitted player Bama is targeting is Trevor Lacey, a 6’3″ guard from Butler High School in Huntsville who is ranked as a top-40 national player. He has offers from Alabama and Auburn in addition to Kentucky and UConn. As a top-40 national player, it’s clear he’s pretty highly regarded by the recruiting gurus, but beyond that, long-time Alabama high school basketball observers insist that Lacey is the best scoring guard to come through the state in recent memory, and that he will provide instant offense for someone as a freshman in college.” (Hat tip Aaron’s UK Basketball Blog.)

Jennifer Smith of the Herald-Leader: “No coach wants to lose three straight games. But Coach Matthew Mitchell said last week that those three losses to start January probably “couldn’t have come at a better time” for the No. 17 Kentucky women’s basketball team. They came in time to – he hopes – kick-start the rest of the Cats’ season.”

John Calipari on Twitter: “I’m very excited to have Coach Larry Brown visiting for a few days. He was at practice & got a good look at our team & can help us improve.”

Trevor Lacey scores 51, says Kentucky in his top five

Kentucky basketball target Trevor Lacey does like Kentucky.

The 6-foot-3 guard from Huntsville, Alabama, rated No. 34 in the Class of 2011 by Rivals,  tells highschoolhoop.net that UK is among his final five choices.

An excerpt:

HSH: Let’s talk colleges. You still at five?
TL: Yes, it’s Kentucky, Alabama, Connecticut, Auburn and Kansas.

HSH: You planning on taking visits soon?
TL: Yeah, I’m gonna take the visits and then decide after that. I don’t know exactly when I’m going to take the visits. I like all five of the schools a lot. I can’t wait to get to the schools and see what all they have to offer.

Lacey also scored 51 points on Friday night, reports All Kentucky Hoops.

And Greg Ostendorf of the Tuscaloosa News has some more Trevor Lacey news, including the fact Auburn coach Tony Barbee was at Lacey’s game on Friday.

BBL: Trevor Lacey offered; DeAndre Daniels update

Big Blue Links for Tuesday:

TREVOR LACEY DECISION COMING? – All Kentucky Hoops reports that UK has offered the 6-foot-3 guard, ranked No. 34 by Rivals, and that Lacey could make a decision soon.

BRASSOW GETS HIS RING BACK – Eric Lindsey of Cat Scratches reports, “In the land of Kentucky basketball, finding a Final Four basketball ring of a former basketball player lies somewhere between the equivalent of discovering the Holy Grail and a 10-carat diamond. Quite literally, the ring is priceless. So imagine Jeff Brassow’s surprise when he was contacted by a Fayette Urban County Government employee and told his long-lost Final Four ring had been found. To give back an item of such worth and merit in a time of such dishonesty and underwhelming values was a jolt of shock for Brassow.”

DEANDRE DANIELS UPDATE – The 6-7 forward, who visited UK over the weekend, and can enroll in January, will visit North Carolina State. “NC State has been pushing hard for both Daniels and Garrett since this summer when Larry Harris first had contact with Garrett’s step-father and expressed NC State’s interest,” reports Pack Insider. “Since then it hasn’t been only Harris on the case, head coach Sidney Lowe and Monte Towe have also made their way down to Florida to visit the two stars. With NC State on both of their lists and the Wolfpack eager to land them, they’ve decided to take a visit to Raleigh together on December 19th when State takes on Arizona in the RBC Center, according to Garrett.” (Hat tip to Aaron’s UK Basketball Blog.)

– Jerry Tipton’s AP Top 25 college basketball ballot.

– Tipton writes that Knight, Liggins and Jones are eating up the minutes for the Cats.

SEC basketball taking its early lumps, writes Mark Story of the H-L.

THE SWITCH TO THE 3-4 – Rick Minter could be named UK’s new co-defensive coordinator as early as today, and there is speculation the Cats will switch to a 3-4 scheme next season. Bleed Blue Kentucky writes, “Before Rick Minter is named the new Co-Defensive Coordinator, he is already telling recruits the Cats will switch to a 3-4 defensive scheme in 2011. I have to admit, I wouldn’t be a huge fan of the change. UK hasn’t shown the ability to stop the run well enough to make the change in my opinion. However, the Cats have recruited defensive lineman such as Brice Laughlin and Donte Rumph who are natural defensive ends.”

Jon Davis is solid with his UK commitment, reports Chip Cosby of the Herald-Leader.
