Video: Ridge Wilson wants at least a sack a game

Ridge Wilson looks like a football player, tall at 6-foot-3, muscular at 243 pounds. He has the face of a football player. This year, he hopes to perform like a football player.

Rick Minter hopes so, as well. Minter is UK’s new defensive coordinator. One of his first moves when taking over was to switch Wilson from a defensive end to a more hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end. The reason was to give the former Louisville Central star more free reign to cause havocs. That would mean hurries, sacks, forcing fumbles.

Wilson’s goal: At Media Day today, Wilson said he would like to average a sack a game. He said that would be a pretty good number.

BBL: B-ball practice reports, Joe Mansour, Ridge Wilson

Joe Mansour (H-L photo/David Perry)

Joe Mansour (H-L photo/David Perry)

Big Blue Links for Tuesday:

My column with impressions from a pair of Kentucky basketball practices, as Cats get ready for Canada: “Ah, but he’s learning. At one point, Lamb drove the lane and missed a contested shot. Calipari blew his whistle for another teaching point.’You thought you were going to get bailed out,’ the coach told Lamb. ‘You’re at Kentucky now. The officials are not going to bail you out.’”

New kicker Joe Mansour has a big leg and lots of swagger, reports Chip Cosby of the Herald-Leader: “Mansour’s résumé as a place-kicker isn’t too shabby, either. He was a three-time All-State selection and was named the place-kicker on Georgia’s All-Decade Team. He also made a 59-yard field goal his senior year, the third-longest in state history. With his team leading by 35 points late in the game, LaGrange Coach Steve Pardue took two penalties to move the kick back to 59 yards, and said if he had known at the time that the state record was 63 yards he’d have taken another penalty to give Mansour a shot at it.”

Brett Dawson of the C-J gives his observations from Kentucky’s basketball practices: “The first thing that struck me is that these practices aren’t entirely different from the ones we saw last April as Calipari first installed his dribble-drive motion offense for players returning from the 2008-09 team. True, there’s considerably more talent on the roster now than then (remember, John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, etc., weren’t on campus yet at that time), but the talking points are much the same.”

Eric Lindsey of Cat Scratches gives his observations from Kentucky’s basketball practices: “First of all, this won’t be last year’s team in any way shape or form – good or bad. This is simply a different team made up of different players. For one, this team isn’t as big. It’s not lacking on height by any means, but the team is thinner (that’s what happens when you lose two beasts like DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton). The team is also much quieter. There are not nearly as many eccentric personalities. Every guy, at least in the hour that I watched, seems to go about their business quietly. Again, don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.”

Tom Leach gives his observations from Kentucky’s basketball practices:This looks to be a better perimeter shooting team; Lamb has a big-time rep for his stroke but I was impressed with Knight and Poole as perimeter shooters, too–and Liggins’ jumper looks better than ever. Terrence Jones has a high arc on his shot but can hit it from beyond the three-point line at times.”

BBL: What’s up with Marquis Teague?

Big Blue Links for Tuesday:

Chip Cosby of the Herald-Leader on UK linebacker/defensive end Ridge Wilson:

But Wilson’s early progress was derailed when he was charged with fourth-degree assault for punching a woman in the face last September. Wilson saw his Wildcat career flash before his eyes, but then-UK Coach Rich Brooks, citing Wilson’s previous track record as a solid citizen, reinstated him to the team.

Wildcat Blue Blog on Marquis Teague:

The future of the 2011 class takes a big step forward when Marquis Teague makes his college decision known. He will make his decision at 1:30 PM Thursday and this has evolved into a Kentucky vs Louisville decision. Now that Michael Chandler has de-committed from the Cardinals. Pitino desperately needs a win in the recruiting department. Getting Teague will obviously get Calipari further toward a monster 2011 class, but it has become apparent that the top talent in the 2011 class is actively seeking out Calipari and making their pitches to be recruited.

Straitpinkie on UK recruiting suspense:

With the upcoming decisions of Marquis Teague, Terrence Jones, and CJ Leslie, I think that predictability is about to go out the window and those those gluttons for surprise are about to get their fix. Over the next two to three weeks, I expect all three of these prospects to make public commitments with UK prominently involved, and when they step to the podium, I think you are going to have people in the know and out of the know guessing multiple ways and potentially even throwing their arms up in the air and saying “I have no idea”.

Ryan Clark of the Kentucky Enquirer on Marquis Teague:

That brings us to Thursday, when we are supposed to hear of the decision of 2011 point guard Marquis Teague of Indianapolis. A bit of history here: UofL set its sights on Teague way back in 2009 or 2008, and they began their recruiting push at that time, even hiring one of his coaches to their staff. Teague is generally regarded as not only the best point guard in the class, but possibly the best player, behind only UK commit Michael Gilchrist. For two seasons now, the Cards have displayed mediocre point guard play, only to point to the future and say Teague is on the way (which, by the way, I’d like to point out that Teague is also, in all probability, a one-and-done player).

Report: UK football player to be charged with assault

Ridge Wilson

Ridge Wilson

Update: Chip Cosby has that Wilson has been suspended from the team.

WLEX-TV in Lexiington is reporting that UK freshman linebacker Ridge Wilson will be charged with assault after alledgedly striking a female student in the face on campus.

UK coach Rich Brooks said that Wilson will not play Saturday and that his future with the team is up in the air.

Wilson is one of just five true freshmen that played in UK’s opener against Miami of Ohio. The other four were La’Rod King, Martavius Neloms, Donald Russell and Larry Warford.
