Offensive coordinator Randy Sanders talked to media after today’s practice about quarterback Morgan Newton, the running back position — look for Josh Clemons to get the ball — and going against a Western Kentucky defense with a new coordinator.

Offensive coordinator Randy Sanders said he needed to see the tape before making any sweeping proclamations from this morning’s scrimmage. But Sanders did say he liked the way Raymond Sanders ran the football. He said he continues to be impressed with Josh Clemons when the freshman has the football in his hands.

As for quarterback Morgan Newton, Sanders said, “I think Morgan’s on tract.”

He said that one of Newton’s strengths is that the junior doesn’t turn the ball over. And today he hit Matt Roark on a long post route, then on a 30-yard post route. Newton also hit LaRod King down the field. The question, said Sanders, is whether they can protect Newton long enough to throw deep passes. That has been curtailed somewhat by the pre-season injuries to starters on the offensive line.

UK offensive coordinator Randy Sanders was not made available to the media on Monday, so we caught up with him after today’s scrimmage. He talks here about what set Mike Hartline apart from his two competitors.

Here first is UK offensive coordinator Randy Sanders. Got in late on Randy’s interview, but the OC is holding his cards pretty close to the vest, anyway. Wouldn’t be shocked, however, if a starter is announced Sunday or Monday.
