Kentucky player updates after win over Western

(H-L photo/Mark Cornelison)

A player-by-player look at Kentucky:

Terrence Jones: Produced his third double-double in his past four games. Scored 22 points, his highest total since his 27-point game at LSU on Jan. 28. The sophomore made nine of 13 shots, hit one of his two three-point attempts and was a perfect three-of-three from the line. Grabbed 10 rebounds, and is now averaging 10.2 rebounds per game over his last four. Compare this to last year when Jones had 10 points and two rebounds against Princeton in his NCAA Tournament debut.

Anthony Davis: Scored 16 points for his fifth consecutive double-figure game. Grabbed nine rebounds, so missed a double-double by just one rebound. Blocked seven shots, his highest total since he blocked seven at Vanderbilt on Feb. 11. Davis made four-of-five shots in the second half. He had 11 points, four rebounds and four blocked shots in the second half.

Darius Miller talks about the tournament and what it meant to win MVP honors at least year’s tourney. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist talks about being named first-team All-SEC.

Anthony Davis was not available. The same day the freshman center won Player of the Year honors in the SEC, he was out of town because of a death in his family.

Anthony Davis and Darius Miller pick up awards

The college basketball season awards are starting to file in and Anthony Davis has been named Sporting News National Player of the Year. TSN writes: “Davis leads the nation in that category, but it’s the breadth of his defensive wizardry that separates him from even the best shot blockers. Davis has an uncanny feel for defending pick-and-roll plays, hedging more effectively than the folks at Goldman Sachs, blitzing more savagely than Terrell Suggs. The residual quickness from his days as a guard allows him to erase jump shots as well as layups.”

Meanwhile, over at SI.com, Seth Davis has named UK’s Darius Miller as the captain of his All-Glue team. Davis writes: “Miller is a genuine throwback, which is ironic considering he plays for the program that has been the very embodiment of one-and-done recruiting. (To great success, I might add.) Miller is a senior (yes, a senior at Kentucky) who has gotten a little bit better each year. He possesses the classic glue guy’s blend of power and finesse. At 6-8, 225 pounds, he has the body of a power forward, yet he strokes threes as well as any two guard in America.”
