John Kiesewetter of the Cincinnati Enquirer has the news that WLEX’s Alan Cutler will be returning to the Bengals Radio Network this year.

Cutler was part of Bengals broadcasts for eight years before a round of Clear Channel layoffs took him off the job. But now he’s back.

An excerpt:

Now the Cut-Man is back. He was hired by the team, which has taken radio rights in-house this year. The Bengals control radio content for six hours (11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) around Sunday games.

“The call came out of the blue. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be back,” he says. “I was very surprised and quickly said yes.”

Dan Hoard has replaced Brad Johansen as the Bengals’ play-by-play man on radio. He’ll be the one trying to be heard over color man Dave Lapham.

Media Approval Ratings: Alan Cutler

Drumroll please — Media Approval Ratings are back.

We haven’t offered (most of) the local media up for judgement since 2009, and with the dog days of summer just up ahead, we can’t resist the urge to do it all over again. We will do one approval per day.

We’ll start with the TV guys, and with WLEX-TV’s Alan Cutler. The New York native has had a couple of turns at the local NBC affiliate. He’s been at Channel 18 since 1987 in his second stint.

So what do you say on Alan Cutler, approve or disapprove?

Alan Cutler, Randall Cobb and Facebook

Randall Cobb

Randall Cobb

WLEX’s Alan Cutler and UK sophomore Randall Cobb have had a little back-and-forth on Facebook, according to Cutler.

Alan says Randall posted something on his account about having a strong dislike for the media.

Then Alan gave his reply.

I was there today at practice when Randall was being asked questions. He was asked if he wanted to be quarterback, and agree with Alan that he handled it well. (Randall always does.) Didn’t think there was malice in the question.

I do think that in the midst of a three-game losing streak, coming off a game the team thought it should have won Saturday, fuses are a bit short around the UK camp.

Bad news for WLEX’s Alan Cutler. The Cincinnati Enqurier reports that the Lexington-based sportscaster was among the layoffs announced Tuesday by Clear Channel, the mammoth radio group based in San Antonio.

Alan was doing a morning show on WCKY-AM and had for the last eight years been the host of the Cincinnati Bengals radio network. He was also doing some fill-in work on the Reds network.

Clear Channel also laid off Cincinnati Enquirer sports columnist Paul Daugherty, who for the past two years had been the host of WLW’s nightly sports talk show from 6 p.m. to 9. Doc had also done the Extra Innings show after Reds’ games during the week.

Also laid off were Clear Channel bloggers, including C. Trent Rosecrans, who had worked for the Cincinnati Post.
