Loss drops Lady Vols two games behind UK women

(AP photo//Mark Humphrey)

The Kentucky women picked up a game in the SEC standings and didn’t have to play to do it.

Vanderbilt upset visiting Tennessee 93-79 last night in Memorial Gym to drop the Lady Vols to 8-3 in the league, two full games behind 10-1 Kentucky. Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina and Vanderbilt are now all tied for third at 7-4.

Dan Fleser of the Knoxville News-Sentinel reports that UT fought back from a 12-point deficit to take the lead, only to fall victim to another Commodores run:

Tiffany Clarke led four double-figure scorers with 23 points for Vanderbilt (19-5, 7-4 SEC), which reached a program high for points against its instate rival. Clarke, who was in foul trouble in the first half, had 19 points in the second half.

Guard Christina Foggie scored 22 points. Her 3-pointer gave the Commodores the lead for good with 11 minutes, 12 seconds left. Stephanie Holzer and Jasmine Lister each scored 19. Lister had 13 assists.

“Vanderbilt was better than us,’’ UT associate head coach Holly Warlick said. “They were stronger. They were smarter. They wanted it more.”

Off this week, Kentucky travels to Tennessee on Monday night for a 7 p.m. game on ESPN2. A win at Thompson-Boling Arena and Matthew Mitchell’s team would have a three-game lead with just four games left to play.

Video: Lamb says UK men would beat women “by 100″

At today’s Kentucky basketball media opp, UK sophomore Doron Lamb was told that after the UK women beat Ole Miss 82-41 last night, some of the UK Hoops players said they didn’t think the men’s team could play with the same defensive intensity as shown by the women.

This was Lamb’s playful reaction. It comes after a couple of questions about UK going on the road Saturday.

BBL: Is Nerlens Noel really leaning toward Providence?

(H-L photo/Pablo Alcala)

Big Blue Links for Friday:

  • Nerlens Noel is leaning toward Providence, reports GoLocalProv. Scott Cordischi writes: “Ed Cooley and his staff have done a marvelous job with their first recruiting class at Providence College. GoLocalProv.com has learned that it could very well become the best in the entire country. A NEPSAC coach who did not want to be indentified told GoLocalProv.com that 6′-10″ big man Nerlens Noel (Tilton School) ‘is leaning towards picking PC.’” (Hat tip Aaron’s UK Basketball Blog)
  • Jarnell Stokes vows to win at Rupp Arena, reports Mike Griffith of Knoxville News-Sentinel. ”It definitely made me more hungry. I definitely wanted to win,” he said. “If anything, I want to win at Rupp Arena. I plan on winning, before I leave, at Rupp Arena. I’m saying that on the record right now. It made me more hungry and made me dislike Kentucky more.”

BBL: Will teams need seven wins for bowl eligibility?

The day after Kentucky’s Tuesday night win over Georgia, the debate continues about whether the Cats get preferential treatment in avoiding those quick Thursday-Saturday turnarounds.

The SEC-leading Kentucky women are in action tonight at Auburn for a  7 p.m. start.

But the bigger news may come out of the college football ranks, where the lousy bowl TV ratings have caused an examination of eligibility criteria. There is apparently now a push to raise the minimum number of wins needed for bowl eligibility from six to seven. That could have a big effect on a school like Kentucky, which in recent years has made the needed six-wins a major priority.

BBL: Kentucky loses football commitment to UCF

(AP photo)

Big Blue Links for Friday:

UK women beat Georgia: Jen Smith of the Herald-Leader reports from Athens, “Sixth-ranked Kentucky doesn’t care how it looks as long as the end result is a win. That’s what they got Thursday night, a 69-64 victory at No. 15 Georgia despite a 10-point second-half deficit and the Bulldogs making UK’s press look silly at times . . . The win, the Cats’ sixth in a row, helped UK remain unbeaten and stay atop the Southeastern Conference. It was the Cats’ fifth win this season over a top-25 team.”

Kentucky football loses a commitment: Jacoby Glenn, a defensive back from Alabama has de-committed from the Cats and committed to Central Florida, reports the Orlando Sentinel. Rivals rated Glenn the 34th best prospect in Alabama. He committed to the Cats in August.

Cats outlast short-handed Dawgs: Roger Clarkson of the Athens Banner-Herald writes, “Georgia started Thursday’s game without injured point guard Jasmine James. But the Lady Bulldogs’ depth situation went from bad to worse when it lost a backup forward before the game and another forward picked up her fourth foul late in the first half. Kentucky’s pressing defense eventually wore down Georgia as the Lady Wildcats erased a double-digit second-half deficit and won 69-64 on Thursday at Stegeman Coliseum.”

Derek Willis will announce choice today: Mike Fields of the Herald-Leader previews the prep junior’s announcement today. Most of those in the know are betting Willis will pledge allegiance to the Cats.

Next Cats special report: Ben Roberts of the Herald-Leader has put together an analysis of the top 10 recruiting classes over the last five seasons.

Shabazz Muhammad update: The consensus No. 1 will visit Kansas. “A lot of people have it wrong about Shabazz,” Muhammad’s father, Ron Holmes, told the Kansas’ Rivals website Jayhawkslant.com. “A lot of people have no idea what’s going on. We’re going to officially visit Kansas, and I’ve said that many times. If it works out, I’m going to bring my entire family to Kansas. I always knew Kansas was a great school, but the in-home visit really opened my eyes.”

Anthony Bennett update: Ray Brewer of the Las Vegas Sun reports that UNLV is still very much in the hunt for Bennett. “The coaching staff is real cool. They are playing that up-tempo style and getting out running,” Bennett told the paper. “That is my style and how I want to play.”

UK basketball ahead of schedule: Keith Taylor of the Winchester Sun writes, “Darius Miller has endured many peaks and valleys in his four-year career at the University of Kentucky. He remembers the Wildcats’ bumpy ride in the Southeastern Conference last season, a trek that resulted in a 7-6 record in the first 13 games. Although the conference tour wasn’t pretty, Kentucky won 10 of its last 11 games at the end of the season, including the SEC¿Tournament, before losing to eventual national champion Connecticut 56-55 in the national semifinals. An overtime loss at Arkansas last year resulted in the team’s successful finish.”

UK rifle staying the course: Guy Ramsey of Cat Scratches writes, “For the majority of his adult life, Harry Mullins had spent the offseason as head coach of Kentucky’s rifle team trying to figure how to get the team over the hump. The Wildcats were clearly one of the elite programs in the nation, stacking successful season on top of successful season, but they had always fallen short of winning a national title. It was a particularly helpless feeling for Mullins because of his belief that he and his team had done everything in their power to accomplish their ultimate goal.”
