For the media, Wednesday marks the official starting point of the Kentucky basketball season. It’s UK Basketball Media Day, the annual confab in which the head coach does a question-and-answer session with the media, followed by the media interviewing players. The most important questions will be Skal Labissiere.
CBS Sports Gary Parrish reported Tuesday that the NCAA “continues to actively look into allegations of possible misconduct by Kentucky freshman Skal Labissiere’s guardian.”
According to Parrish’s source, the NCAA has interviewed former Memphis AAU coach Keith Easterwood on Monday about Labissiere’s guardian, Gerald Hamilton.
It was Easterwood who told CBS Sports last November that Hamilton asked him, “How can I make money off a basketball player?”
Kentucky has consistently denied comment on Labissiere’s status. There have been reports that the UK camp isn’t concerned about the issue, but the longer this drags on the more concerning it must be.
Two days ago, Collegespun reported that one NBA executive doesn’t believe Labissiere will be cleared by the NCAA.
Expect John Calipari to be asked about this when he meets the media at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Don’t expect him to say a whole lot about it, however.
Is this another Enes Kanter situation in which the issue drags on to the point where the NCAA finally rules the player is ineligible? We’ll have to wait — and wait some more — and see.
