Unlike last year, Mark Stoops didn’t pull Patrick Towles’ leg when it came to letting the former Highlands star who was going to be Kentucky’s starting quarterback. This year, the UK coach let the returning starter know he had won the right to the same status this season.
Towles was the favorite to hold off redshirt freshman challenger Drew Barker, but by all reports Barker played well during camp. Towles just played better, perhaps drawing on the experience of having started all 12 games last season.
“I think I’m the best equipped,” Towles said when asked how his experience benefited him the race to be the starter for the opener Sept. 5 against visiting UL-Lafayette.
