Twitter question was asked today about the last unranked team to win the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The reason for the question, of course, is the fact that Kentucky is unranked in the Associated Press Top 25, yet made the Final Four.
Kansas was the last team to win the title as an unranked team. Larry Brown’s Jayhawks beat No. 4 Oklahoma in the NCAA Championship game that year.
Villanova is the only other team to win the title as an unranked team. Villanova upset No. 1 Georgetown in the famous 1985 national title game at Rupp Arena.
This year, Florida enters the Final Four ranked No. 1. Wisconsin is ranked 12th. Connecticut is ranked No. 18.
In the last 30 years, only four teams have won the title ranked No. 1. Kentucky did it in 2012, Duke in 2001, UCLA in 1995 and Duke in 1992.
Here’s a look at the rankings of the NCAA champions over the last 10 years, including the runner-ups.
