At the UK basketball media opp today, UK forward Julius Randle was made available and was asked about the way his game is constantly placed under the microscope.
In fact, ESPN’s Jay Bilas recently said that if Randle was putting up the type of numbers he is putting up now at Kentucky — 16 points and 10.1 rebounds per game — at any other school, the college basketball world would be falling all over itself to talk about the freshman’s phenomenal rookie campaign.
And Randle is coming off a 25-point, 13-rebound effort in the Cats’ 84-70 mashing of Ole Miss in Oxford. The Texas native took just seven shots, but he was 13-of-14 from the free throw line including one stretch in which he was a perfect 10-of-10. John Calipari attributed that to Randle playing fewer minutes, which has improved his production.
In the 87-82 loss at LSU last month, however, Randle was limited to a season-low six points. He appeared bothered by the Tigers’ size and ended up making just three of 10 shots and visited the free throw line just once. He missed that lone attempt.
When asked about the constant scrutiny today, Randle said, “This is the life I chose.”
