A three-spot (plus video) from Neal Brown’s question-and-answer with the media after today’s practice.
1. Look for more mystery at quarterback. Though Maxwell Smith has returned to practice and thrown the ball well — “No signs of the injury to me,” Brown said — the coaches are going to play this like the days leading up to the Western Kentucky game. No starter will be named publicly. The staff will know, but Florida won’t know until either Smith or Jalen Whitlow runs out onto the field. Brown said it will be like the WKU game only “they’ll play better.”
2. Jeff Badet. Brown sort of slipped in that the freshman wide receiver from Florida is starting to coming on.
3. The third-down struggles. Brown said that it goes back to execution and the coach admitted, “There’s a few play calls I’d like to have back on third down.” When he was offensive coordinator at Troy, Brown’s team struggled on third down in 2008. He studied it during the off-season, changed some preparation things and last season at Texas Tech the Red Raiders finished 10th in the nation in that category.
