Louisville coach Rick Pitino isn’t just thinking a repeat Final Four appearance or a repeat national championship.
Pitino is thinking dynasty.
Eric Crawford of WDRB reports that Pitino told the Louisville Advertising Federation on Friday night that he is reaching for the stars and beyond for his Cardinals.
“It’s been two unbelievable years. Back-to-back Final Fours, which is extremely difficult, and in arguably one of the toughest conferences in all of basketball — the Big East — winning two championships, the last of which was won at Madison Square Garden in the last one of its kind to be played there with all these tremendous teams. One more, and you’ve now created a dynasty. Anytime you have three years at the championship level, you’ve created a dynasty. And that’s going to be our goal.”
Pitino said he has brought up the Packers, the Patriots, the Celtics, the Lakers, the Bulls as examples of runs that constituted dynasties. He also said he knows there are several teams out there that are just as good, if not better than Louisville — including Kentucky — but that likes his team heading into October.
“We know it will be difficult,” Pitino said, “but I think we’re up to the challenge.”
