A quick three-spot from our media session after Kentucky’s football practice this morning.
1. Both head coach Mark Stoops and offensive coordinator Neal Brown said the quarterback battle has been narrowed to two. Neither coach would reveal the identities of the two, but it’s believed that Jalen Whitlow and Maxwell Smith are the two now battling it out. Smith started four games last season, Whitlow seven. (Morgan Newton started the game at Florida.)
Stoops also indicated that the coaches may talk publicly in a couple of days about the situation. He also said that both quarterbacks are likely to see action.
“It’s going to be no surprise that both those guys deserve to play and will play,” said the head coach.
2. Stoops said that the program has asked the NCAA for a waiver to be able to express their condolences in a tangible way to the family of DeAntre Turman, a high school player who died after being injured in a scrimmage on Friday night. Kentucky had offered Turman a scholarship.
Stoops said they hoped to able to send an official “offer letter” to Turman’s father, though NCAA rules prohibit offer letters being sent to players of Turman’s age. The coach said he hoped UK would be allowed to send flowers, etc., to show their respects.
Cornerbacks coach Derrick Ansley had offered Turman after his performance at a UK camp. Stoops said he did not know the young man personally as the school was just starting the recruiting process with Turman, who was a Class of 2015 recruit.
3. Overall, Stoops was happy with Monday’s workout. He said he saw good enthusiasm, etc. He said that he is trying to put pressure on the players in anticipation of the August 31 opener against Western Kentucky. Brown said he hasn’t mentioned Western Kentucky and doesn’t want his players thinking about Western Kentucky yet. He just wants them to get better.
Brown did say the receivers did much better catching the football on Monday than they did in the scrimmage on Saturday. The receivers had shown improvement in that capacity all fall until contracting a case of the drops inside Commonwealth Stadium.
