Trae Golden leaving Tennessee

News out of Knoxville this afternoon says that Tennessee point guard Trae Golden will transfer at the end of the spring semester. The announcement is a surprise considering that Golden has just one more year of eligibility remaining. He started 58 of 96 games he played for UT.

Golden averaged 13.1 points as a sophomore, then dipped slightly to 12.6 this past season. His play was up-and-down but came on at the end of the year when Tennessee won nine of 10 games in one stretch. He scored 32 points in a four-overtime win over Texas A&M.

CBS Sports, via sources, says that Golden’s departure is over an academic issue. It leaves the Vols in a lurch as there is not really a pure point guard on the roster for next season, one in which Tennessee was optimistic considering that Jordan McRae, Jarnell Stokes and Jeronne Maymon return.
