Longtime official John Cahill is retiring. The 60-year-old Albany, New York native is hanging up his whistle to become the supervisor of officials for the new Big East Conference. You know, the Catholic Seven from the old Big East, plus Xavier, Butler and Creighton.

Cahill was one of the most respected officials out there. He worked the national title game between Louisville and Michigan in Atlanta last month. It was the 11th Final Four for Cahill, who works as a lawyer during the day.

He worked four UK games this past season: the Louisville game at the KFC Yum Center on Dec. 29, the Alabama game in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 22, and games at South Carolina on Feb. 5 and Vanderbilt on Feb. 20.

Since the 2006-07 season, Cahill worked 20 Kentucky games.
