Rick Pitino has Louisville back in the Sweet 16 for the second straight year, with an eye on bigger things to come for the NCAA Tournament’s overall No. 1 seed.
So here’s a look at how Pitino compares to John Calipari in NCAA Tournament wins since Rick returned to college coaching, taking the Louisville job for the 2001-02 season. Calipari was then in his second season at Memphis before moving on to Kentucky in 2009-10.
This is just the fourth season since then that both have not been in the NCAA Tournament. Both were in the NIT that first year, back in 2002. Calipari was in the NIT in 2005, Pitino in 2006. Calipari was in the NIT this season.
In the above chart, it should be noted that Calipari was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round in 2003. Pitino took a first-round knockout in 2004 and 2010. And this is the first year Calipari did not win an NCAA Tournament game since 2005.
To this point, Calipari has 27 NCAA wins since 2002. Pitino has 19. And counting.
