Hate on Coach K if you want, but he’s right

COACH-K-560

By all reports, Duke’s play on the floor last night at Virginia was just one of Mike Krzyzewski’s problems.

After the game, as Virginia students/fans stormed the court, Coach K got into it with at least one UVA fan, traded F-bombs and had to be ushered by security into the losing locker room.

Andrew Jones of Fox Sports reports that there was no protected path given to Duke players and coaches leaving the court. Jones reports that several Blue Devils were cursing at fans as they departed.

Coach K in press conference afterward:

“Whatever you’re doing, you need to get the team off first. Look, celebrate, have fun, obviously you won, that’s cool. Just get our team off the court, and our coaching staff, before the students come on.

“Do you know how close you are to… Just put yourself in the position of one of our players or coaches, and I’m not saying any fan did this, but the potential is there all the time. But they can just go up to you and say, ‘Coach, you’re a …’ or push you or hit you or whatever. What do you do?

“What if you did something (in retaliation)? That would be the story, right? We deserve that type of protection. “

Say what you want, but Krzyzewski is right. First of all, storming the court has become too frequent an occurrence. Second, someone is going to get hurt. And has.
