Doug Shows’ real record

It was tweeted yesterday that official Doug Shows, who threw UK assistant John Robic out of Saturday’s game and later T-d up Willie Cauley-Stein, has called just seven technical fouls over the past three years, with four of the seven being on UK.

That’s not even close to being accurate.

Shows has called 51 technical fouls over the past three years. He’s called 12 technical fouls this year alone. Show is known for having a quick trigger when it comes to techs, not just with Kentucky.

In fact, in games that Doug Shows has officiated, with John Calipari as coach, Kentucky was 20-1 until the last four games. The Cats have lost all four — at Louisville, Texas A&M at home, at Alabama and at Tennessee. That brings the mark to 20-5.

By the way, Shows worked the 2011 championship game between Connecticut and Butler. He worked last year’s Final Four national semifinal between Kentucky and Louisville. UK won that game 69-61 to advance to the national title game.

Several people posted or tweeted that, including Channel 18. He has called 7 technical in UK games this season. He may have been a good official at one time. Good officials have bad games, but I have seen several of his games this year where he has missed calls and also become more of the focus than the game. Another example is the Alabama game where the ball went off 2 Bama players under the basket and Bama was awarded the ball. Officials just like players, can eventually not be at their peak. The miss on the jump ball was a terrible mistake. Officials are supposed to keep up with the possession, not just the scorer’s table.
Officiating did not cost UK the game, but that play was very big in keeping UT’s momentum going. They hit a 3 on that possession. Perhaps UK could have stayed closer and stopped UT’s run if the call had gone the other way with no technical.
College officiating is inconsistent this year. Not just for UK games. It has gradually become more and more physical over the last few years. That is not entirely on the officials. But I laugh every year when they announce a rule that is a point of emphasis. It is usually something that should have already been enforced and they are inconsistent on calling it. It will take several seasons to clean it up the rough play and we may have to endure some games that become free throw shooting contest.

Shows has worked five UK games this season. Five technical fouls have been called in those games. One was in the Louisville game. One was in the Texas A&M game at Rupp. Three were called Saturday. Shows did throw Robic out. He did call the technical on Cauley-Stein. It was Mark Whitehead who called the technical on Archie Goodwin.

On the link to the Statsheet when you look under schedule, it lists 4 T’s yesterday, 1 for the A & M game, and 2 for the Louisville game. Archie deserved the T yesterday. I thought a UT player could have gotten one on the WCS play also.
Shows only ranks tied for 80th in the number of technical this year.

Between 2010 and the Tn game, he has called over 362 T’s. Not the most of any ref, but right up there with the most in the SEC.
