Ryan Timmons picks Kentucky

Update: My story on the Timmons’ commitment.

As expected, Franklin County wide receiver Ryan Timmons announced today that he will sign with Kentucky on Wednesday.

Timmons picked Kentucky over Florida, Ohio State and Illinois.

He is rated as a four-star prospect by ESPN.

– Timmons says, “I’m excited to play for Coach Stoops.”

– Timmons says, “Honestly, I was falling away from Kentucky,” until Mark Stoops was named as coach.

– Timmons says it came down to UK and Florida and that he eliminated Ohio State last week.

– He says he was impressed with new offensive coordinator Neal Brown. “We got along well. He runs that offense that we run here at Franklin County.”

– Said it was “kind of tough” telling Joker Phillips, now assistant at Florida, that he was picking Kentucky. Said he had a relationship with Phillips from his sophomore year.

– Timmons says he enjoyed the process and visiting other schools.

– Timmons said he liked Arkansas and its offense until Bobby Petrino was fired.

– Timmons said he did see the University of Kentucky RV that was in the Franklin County High School parking lot before the announcement.

– On Neal Brown, “We hit it off the first day we talked.”

– Timmons said he did not expect to get emotional during press conference — he did — but was told by Coach Chris Tracy that he would tear up.

– Says that the fact UK will run the same system that Franklin County runs played a big role in his decision.

– Timmons said he did talk to Jeff Badet and JoJo Kemp, who both encouraged him to sign with UK.

– Timmons said Mark Stoops “yelled and screamed” when he told the new UK coach he was coming to Kentucky.

– Timmons said he has talked to Trinity’s Jason Hatcher and will call the defensive end later today to try and convince him to sign with Kentucky.

– “I think the coaching staff that Coach Stoops has put together, they’ve all had success at other schools,” Timmons said.

– Stoops said Brown told him that “he wants to throw the ball and he wants to score.”

– Timmons said that instead of going to a school that was already established, “I want to be a part of building something.”
