As expected, former UK assistant football coaches Mike Summers and Mike Cassity have joined Bobby Petrino’s first staff at Western Kentucky University.
Summers and Cassity were both assistants on Joker Phillips’ staff last year at Kentucky. Summers had been UK’s offensive line coach since Phillips became UK head coach three seasons ago. Cassity joined the staff last year as defensive backs coach.
Summers and Cassity were both members of Petrino’s staff at Louisville. Summers followed Petrino to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and then to the University of Arkansas. Summers, son-in-law of former UK basketball coach Joe B. Hall, left Fayetteville to come to Lexington before Petrino was fired at Arkansas.
In all, WKU announced the hirings of seven assistant coaches – Ricky Brumfield (special teams/cornerbacks), Mike Cassity (secondary), Kevin Peoples (defensive ends/recruiting coordinator), L.D. Scott (defensive tackles), Kolby Smith (running backs), Mike Summers (offensive line) and Lamar Thomas (wide receivers).
