BBL: UK’s resume, Alex Poythress need improvement

Big Blue Links for Tuesday:

  • Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports has no doubt Kentucky will make the NCAA Tournament, but a weak SEC is likely to hurt the Cats’ tournament resume, especially considering UK didn’t get a marquee win in pre-conference play.
  • John Calipari has turned his attention to Alex Poythress, reports Jerry Tipton of the Herald-Leader, and the Kentucky coach is using individual workouts, much as he did to improve point guard Ryan Harrow.
  • And Calipari says he did not intentionally switch free throw shooters in last Saturday’s game at Louisville, reports Tipton. But, said Calipari, if you want to believe he was on the grassy knoll in 1963, then he was on the grassy knoll in 1963. Actually, this tempest seems a whole lot of internet fluff over nothing.
  • Mark Story asks if Kentucky will be better than Louisville come March? I say no, but read Mark’s take on the subject. By the way, I’ve been told I was too negative in my Monday column about UK’s performance at the Yum Center, but I remain skeptical about how far this team can really go.
  • There are E-Rupption Zone tickets available for UK’s Wednesday night (6 p.m.) game with visiting Eastern Michigan.
  • Kyle Tucker of the Courier-Journal also writes on the search for Poythress improvement, and has this quote from Harrow, “Coach Cal is different than any coach I’ve ever come up against, and I’m sure he’s a different coach than Alex has ever had. Being in high school, if your coach was to talk to you like that, you’d be like, ‘Who are you talking to?’ You basically need me in high school. In college, you can’t do that. You have to listen to everything he says.”
  • I admit I liked the “Hunger Game” headline on this Brett Dawson post about the Poythress-Calipari matchup on the Cats Illustrated site. UK has been getting a taste of Poythress’ talents, but needs something “more substantive.”
  • Jon Hale of KyForward also writes about Poythress, who played all of three minutes in the second half of Kentucky’s loss at Louisville.
  • Glenn Logan of A Sea of Blue is still searching for the silver lining in Kentucky’s loss at No. 4 Louisville on Saturday. “It’s not fair to say that Louisville didn’t beat UK, and that UK lost it. But Kentucky had a lot more to do with their own demise than anyone should be comfortable with,” he writes.
  • The New Orleans Hornets have assigned Darius Miller to the D-League so that the former Kentucky star can pick up some needed experience, reports Jimmy Smith of the Times-Picayune.
