“Sit down, Joe B.!”
That’s my most vivid memory of the Stokely Athletics Center, the former home of the Tennessee Volunteers which is being shut down this month and prepared for demolition.
It was host to many terrific Kentucky-Tennessee basketball games from its opening in 1958 through 1987 before the Vols moved into its current home, Thompson-Boling Arena.
According to the Associated Press, the bookstore located inside Stokely is closing Saturday. Offices are to be vacated by the end of the month as the university prepares to have the building demolition to clear way for a newer facility.
And Stokely will always be remembered as the site of the “Dream Game”, the 1983 NCAA Mideast Regional final between Kentucky and Louisville. It was the first meeting between the two schools in basketball since 1959. Louisville won 80-68 in overtime.
