By hiring former Auburn star Jimmy Brumbaugh to coach his defensive line, Mark Stoops has opened the door to some impressive junior college recruits.
Brumbaugh was the defensive line coach at East Mississippi Community College, the Scooba, Miss., school that has not one, not two but three top-notch defensive line prospects who are expected to sign with major colleges when the junior college signing period begins Dec. 19.
Za’Darius Smith is a 6-foot-6, 260-pound defensvive end from Greenville, Ala. Stoops recruited Smith while the defensive coordinator at Florida State. In fact, Smith has offers from Florida State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas and Texas A&M. He visited Texas last weekend.
According to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Smith has stopped doing interviews. But associate head coach William Jones says Smith has not made up his mind. “His best football is definitely ahead of him,” Jones said.
Lauren Jackson is a 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive tackle from Meridian, Miss. He already had an offer from former UK defensive line coach David Turner. Jackson also has offers from Iowa, Auburn, Mississippi State and Missouri.
Jarran Reed, a 6-4, 310-pound tackle from Goldsboro, N.C., recently de-committed from UNC and committed to Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss.
