A three-spot from UK basketball’s media opportunity today previewing Saturday’s game against Portland.
1. “This team has the farthest to go.” John Calipari said that about this team. Of the four teams that he’s had here, this team has the farthest to go as far as competitiveness, etc. The coach said that’s why he is trying to hold them more accountable, making them run after mistakes, making them condition more, etc. He said that on Sunday and Monday his team ran 40 suicide drills.
2. Ryan Harrow is making progress. The UK point guard isn’t there yet after missing time with an illness. Since his return, has worked back in slowly up until he played a season-high 21 minutes against Samford. He said he was in the gym three times to work out on Thursday. Part of that was working on his shot. Harrow has hit just three of 19 shots (15.8 percent) so far. He’s missed all six of his three-point attempts.
3. Portland is not bad. The Pilots are 3-5, but the five losses are not bad losses. They lost 81-52 at Ohio, a team that lost in overtime to North Carolina in last year’s NCAA Sweet 16. They lost 83-64 at Middle Tennessee, 69-54 at New Mexico and 72-60 at Washington State. Tuesday night, they nearly beat No. 21-ranked UNLV before falling 68-60. Portland led 40-31 with 15 minutes remaining. It was a three-point game with three minutes to play.
