Butch Jones resigns at Cincinnati, headed to Tennessee

Update: Tennessee has called a 2:30 p.m. news conference for 2:30 p.m. Friday to name Butch Jones as coach.

News out of Cincinnati Friday morning is that head football coach Butch Jones has resigned.

This comes as reports Thursday night linked Jones with the opening at Tennessee.

There was quite a bit of negative feedback on twitter from Tennessee fans about the potential of hiring Jones. I guess after Jon Gruden, Bob Stoops, Mike Gundy and Charlie Strong, the idea of Jones as the Vols head coach is not that appealing.

But the former Central Michigan head coach is a good coach who has done a good job at Cincinnati. His teams use a wide-open spread offense and play physical, tough defense. Jones coached under Brian Kelly at Central Michigan before being hired as West Virginia’s receivers coach by Rich Rodriguez. He then succeeded Kelly at Cincinnati after Kelly left for Notre Dame.

He was thought to be involved in the Kentucky search to the point that there were reports that UK had offered him the job. Not sure that was true. Then Jones’ name was linked with Purdue and Colorado before he turned in his resignation this morning.
