More mixed signals about Charlie Strong and Tennessee

Charlie Strong is reportedly atop Tennessee’s list to replace fired football coach Derek Dooley, but Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports wrote last night that Louisville officials were quietly optimistic that they would be able to retain Strong’s services.

Some people took that to mean that Strong was likely to stay. Not so, said Forde this morning via Twitter. “Media saying Y! Sports reporting Charlie Strong staying at Louisville not reading carefully. UL optimistic, not certain,” he tweeted.

John Adams of the Knoxville News-Sentinel wrote that Strong’s strengths match Tennessee’s weaknesses. Strong is considered a good recruiter, and his background is on the defensive side of the football. Tennessee was terrible defensively this past season, a season when beating Kentucky accounted for UT’s only SEC win.

At a press conference Monday, Strong sounded like a coach with one foot out the door. And yet late last night, the tide appeared to have turned the other way. We shall see what today brings.
