Might Auburn be interested in Mark Stoops?

Two years after winning the national championship, Auburn fired Gene Chizik today. While Bobby Petrino is expected to be a top candidate for the newly-created opening, don’t be surprised if Mark Stoops gets some play for that job.

CBS Sports’ Jeremy Fowler reported Saturday that Kentucky had interviewed the Florida State defensive coordinator as a possible replacement for fired head coach Joker Phillips.

But Auburn reportedly tried to hire Stoops last year for its open defensive coordinator position. One report had Stoops packing up and leaving Tallahassee to replace Ted Roof, who had left Auburn to be the DC. The report proved to be false and FSU ended up with the nation’s second best defense statistically, trailing only Alabama.

Chizik hired ex-Falcons defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder and Auburn proceeded to go 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the SEC. Its defense was ranked 113th in the nation. Today, Chizik got the ax.

Meanwhile, Stoops and Florida State are preparing for Saturday’s ACC title game matchup with Georgia Tech.

    Mr. Clay,

Are you trying to be provocative or pumping up a potential Barnhart hire? The answer to your question is a resounding no! Do you really belive that Auburn is going to go after a guy for head coach that they almost hired as a coordinator a year ago? I do not believe that would look too great to the Auburn faithful. Don’t get me wrong, I think Stoops has the potential to be a very good hire for UK, but Auburn is shopping on a different level. According to their local paper, one of their top candidates is Jimbo Fisher, head coach of the Seminoles, not just the DC. Word is that he is unhappy with the current administration and knows that he has no real shot of playing for a national title in the ACC.

  2. John Clay says:

Tennessee people were saying yesterday there was talk that Fisher was unhappy and might move. If so, maybe Stoops would replace Fisher?

  3. operationruse says:

I could certainly see the Fisher to Tenn move if he is unhappy, but I am not sure the Seminoles will want to promote from within. I just think that job is too good not to open up the process, particularly coming on the heels of a hciw deal. To that end, has this head coach in waiting fad worked for anyone outside of Oregon? I know that Florida State has not been horrible by any stretch under Jimbo, but they also certainly have not returned to the Bowden dominance of the early 90s. While that may never happen again, I am sure they believe they should occassionally be a serious player in the national title discussion, which they have not outside of silly preseason predictions.

  4. John Clay says:

The best coach-in-waiting has been the ones who left before the end up being the coach — i.e. Will Muschamp leaving Texas for Florida and James Franklin leaving Maryland for Vanderbilt.

Jimbo apparently now shooting down the CBS report and saying there has been no interview. Jimbo doing damage control after Florida stomped them, or was CBS off base?

  6. John Clay says:

Probably depends on what constitutes an interview. From what I’ve heard I believe Stoops was contacted.
