Charlie Strong on early list of Tennessee possibles

The Knoxville News-Sentinel has a list of possible coaching candidates to replace fired head coach Derek Dooley. One prominent name is current Louisville coach Charlie Strong.

“He figures to be one of the hottest coaching candidates in the nation, although Louisville has said it will do whatever it takes to keep him in the fold,” writes Evan Woodbery of the News-Sentinel. “A former defensive coordinator at South Carolina and Florida, Strong is 23-13 in three seasons at Louisville.”

Jon Gruden, Gary Patterson, Mike Gundy, Kirby Smart and Bobby Petrino also make the list. At last count, a News-Sentinel poll has 56 percent of respondents saying the school should go after Gruden, a former Tennessee grad assistant who is married to a former Tennessee cheerleader.
