Liveblog: Kentucky-Samford football

I’m at Commonwealth Stadium for the final home game of the year as Kentucky takes on Samford. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. There is no local live television coverage. The game is on Comcast Sports South.

Final: Kentucky 34, Samford 3

End of third quarter: Kentucky 34, Samford 3

UK is at the Samford 30-yard line after a 31-yard run by Raymond Sanders. Sanders has gained a career-high 123 yards. Patrick Towles did make an appearance at quarterback this half but threw an interception his first play. UK has outgained Samford 364-94.

McIntosh good again and Kentucky leads 37-3

UK takes the ball and marches down field via the run, with Larry Warford actually playing fullback on a couple of drives. A personal foul face mask penalty against UK kills the drive, however, and Craig McIntosh kicks a 43-yard field goal with 7:35 left to extend the Cats’ lead. Kentucky has outgained Samford 318-93.

Halftime: Kentucky 31, Samford 3

Thirty seconds before the end of the half, UK’s Collins Ukwue sacked Summerlin forcing a fumble that teammate Tristian Johnson picked up and carried 25 yards for a touchdown. So Kentucky is up 31-3 at the half. UK outgained Samford 266-52 in the first half. Whitlow was 10-of-11 for 66 yards. George carried 11 times for 55 yards. Raymond Sanders carried 12 times for 51 yards.

Kentucky defense makes stop, offense turns it into seven more points

After George’s fumble at the 1-yard line, the UK defense held Samford without a first down. A bad Bulldog punt gave the home team the ball at the visitors’ 33-yard line. It took just four plays, with Patrick Towles at quarterback for his second series, for Kentucky to score. Raymond Sanders did the honors, bursting up the middle for a 14-yard score. Towles had a 14-yard completion to Aaron Boyd on the drive.

Kentucky fumbles ball away at Samford 1-yard line

UK’s Jonathan George lost a fumble at the Samford 1-yard line with 3:05 left in the first half. The Cats had a punt return by Demarco Robinson for a touchdown called back by an illegal block personal foul penalty.

McIntosh field goal puts Kentucky up 17-3

After a short punt gave UK good field position at its own 48, the Cats moved down in range for Craig McIntosh to kick a 35-yard field goal with 7:10 left in the first half. Whitlow is now 10-of-11 passing for 66 yards and a score. UK has outgained Samford 197-71.

Samford cuts Kentucky lead to 14-3

The Bulldogs march to the UK 24-yard line where on third down Kentucky’s Miles Simpson breaks up a pass from quarterback Andy Summerlin to running baack Fabian Truss. Cameron Yaw comes on and kicks a 41-yard field goal to get Samford on the board with 13:33 left in the first half. It was a nine-play, 49-yard drive.

Kentucky leads Samford 14-0 at end of first quarter

UK outgained Samford 146-43 in the first quarter. Whitlow completed six of seven passes for 32 yards. George carried five times for 45 yards. Whitlow carried five times for 43 yards and a score.

Cats extend lead to 14-0 as Whitlow scores

Quarterback Jalen Whitlow now has a touchdown pass and a touchdown run. The quarterback goes 20 yards on a draw for a score to extend the Kentucky lead to 14-0 with 1:19 left in first quarter. This drive took 11 plays to go 78 yards. Jonathon George started the drive with a 23-yard run.

Kentucky scores on first drive for 7-0 lead

The Cats won the toss and elected to receive. Good choice. Starting quarterback Jalen Whitlow directs a 14-play, 69-yard scoring drive. The freshman quarterback hit senior Gene McCaskill with an 11-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal to give UK a 7-0 lead with 8:26 left in first quarter. Key play was a seven-yard scramble by Whitlow on a fourth-and-two from the Samford 33-yard line.
