Kentucky inches away from bottom in third-down defense

After that 49-7 weather-shortened but no less emphatic trashing at Arkansas, Kentucky’s defense found itself ranked next to last in all of FBS in third-down defense.

After a somewhat better showing Saturday — UK allowed Georgia to convert five of 12 third downs — the Cats have moved from No. 119 to No. 117 out of 120 teams in that defensive category in the NCAA rankings.

Here are Kentucky’s rankings in the updated NCAA stats after Saturday’s games (last week’s ranking in parenthesis):

  • 113th in total offense at 309.25 yards per game (113)
  • 100th in rushing offense at 119.25 yards per game (106)
  • 104th in passing efficiency at 113.25 rating (106)
  • 83rd in total defense at 426.63 yards per game (77)
  • 75th in rushing defense at 170.0 yards per game (87)
  • 116th in pass-efficiency defense at 157.18 rating (111)
  • 94th in turnover margin at -.63 (93)
  • 117th in third-down defense at 54.24 conversion percentage (119)
