The name Neil Reed will forever live in the annals of Indiana basketball history, though not in the record book. Reed was the player then head coach Bob Knight appeared to be choking at a 1997 IU basketball practice, at least as it looked on a grainy peace of practice video.
The Times-Picayune reports in New Orleans reports that Reed passed away Thursday at age 36 from a massive heart attack.
Reed was dismissed from the IU squad after his junior season in ’97 and finished his playing career at Southern Miss. Three years later he accused Knight of choking him during a practice, a claim that was upheld by the video.
Reed died in California, leaving behind a wife and two daughters, age six and four.
