SEC basketball became a bit more interesting on Monday when South Carolina named the controversial Frank Martin as its new basketball coach.
The former Kansas State coach replaces Darrin Horn, the Lexingtonian who was fired after four seasons. The man known for his frightening glare, won at least 20 games in all five seasons he was the head coach in Manhattan. The Wildcats advanced to the Elite Eight in 2010. They were 22-11 this past season, losing to Syracuse in the NCAA’s second round after a key player was suspended.
His personality apparently clashed with Kansas State AD John Currie. Speculation is Martin’s departure had much to do with their relationship.
As we’ve pointed out, South Carolina is no easy job. The school hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 1973. It has been to the tournament just four times since 1975. Martin will have his work cut out for him.
