A closer look at this week’s AP college basketball poll

Kentucky remains No. 1 in the latest AP basketball poll, released today. It’s the sixth straight week and the eighth overall that John Calipari’s team has been in the top spot. North Carolina held it for the first three polls, including the pre-season poll. Syracuse was No. 1 from poll No. 6 through poll No. 11.

Some movers and shakers: Kansas has moved from No. 8 in poll 13 to No. 3 this week. Duke has gone from No. 10 three polls ago to No. 4 this week. In the same time frame, Michigan State has climbed from No. 11 to No. 5. Marquette has moved from No. 18 three polls ago to No. 8 in the current rankings. Wichita State, which wasn’t even in the rankings three polls ago, has climbed all the way to No. 15.

New Mexico was the only team to drop out of last week’s rankings. The Lobos were 18th last week. After being out for two weeks, Creighton re-entered at No. 25. And Murray State is inching back up the charts, moving from No. 16 to No. 14 to No. 12 the last two weeks.

Louisville’s loss at Cincinnati on Thursday cost the Cardinals two spots. Rick Pitino’s club fell from No. 17 to No. 19. Florida’s loss at Georgia on Saturday dropped the Gators from No. 12 to No. 16. Kentucky and Florida are the only two SEC teams in the rankings. Vanderbilt missed landing a top 25 spot for the fourth straight week.
