The details on that final play and Anthony Davis’ block

After videoing, writing and blogging from the Cats-Heels on Saturday – and a story at the Wendy’s drive-thru on the way home (oh, the glamorous life) – picked up the remote, fired up the TiVo and went over, frame-by-frame, the final play and Anthony Davis amazing block of John Henson that saved the UK victory. It happened so fast in real-time it was difficult to remember exactly what happened. Here’s what did happen.

  • With 21.5 seconds left, and Kentucky leading 73-72, Marquis  Teague at the free throw line for the one-and-one.
  • Teague misses the front end off the back iron.
  • The rebound goes just past Anthony Davis to Reggie Bullock who was the Heel farthest from basket on left side of free-throw lane.
  • Bullock immediately hands off to UNC point guard Kendall Marshall.
  • Marshall crosses the mid-court line with 15.1 seconds left.
  • As he is picked up defensively by Teague, Marshall dribbles from the right side to the top of the key, where he gets a brief screen from John Henson.
  • Teague goes around the screen and Henson peels off to right baseline, where he is guarded by Terrence Jones. Henson tries to set a screen for Reggie Bullock, who is being guarded by Doron Lamb.
  • Harrison Barnes is on the left side, away from the play, being guarded by Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
  • As he gets to the left side of the top of the key, Marshall then bounces a pass inside to Tyler Zeller, who is on the left block, about halfway between free-throw line and the basket.
  • Zeller catches the bounce pass with about 9.4 seconds left, with Anthony Davis on his back.
  • Zeller tries to make a move to his right but loses the ball on the dribble, and it flies up in the air.
  • The loose ball goes directly to Henson just off the right baseline.
  • Jones was guarding Henson, but shading to the lane toward Zeller, and when Zeller made his move into the lane, Jones had come into the lane as well.
  • Henson grabs the ball with his left hand at about 7.7 seconds left and goes straight up for the jumper on the right baseline.
  • Meanwhile, Davis sees Henson gets the ball goes in his direction and leaves his feet as Henson releases.
  • Davis blocks Henson’s shot.
  • Davis then re-jumps and grabs the ball out of the air with about 5.6 left.
  • North Carolina players hesitate, then try to go after Davis for the foul, but too late.
  • Zeller actually takes two skip steps toward the defensive end before he realizes he might need to try and foul Davis.
  • It’s too late, as Davis is able to get the ball to Teague with about three seconds left, and Teague dribbles out the clock.
  • Kentucky wins 73-72.
