BBL: Jarnell Stokes ineligible, could enroll in January

Jarnell Stokes

Touted Memphis basketball prospect Jarnell Stokes, who has taken an official visit to Kentucky, doesn’t have a place to play his senior high school season. His hardship appeal was denied by the Tennessee high school athletics association board of control on Monday. He had been ruled ineligible after transferring from one school to another.

The  Memphis Commerical Appeal quotes Stokes’ father, Willie, as saying it is possible his son might graduate from high school early and enroll in college in January. ”It’s an option,” said Willie Stokes. “He’s an honor student; he’s been taking honors classes all this time. We haven’t seriously discussed him to college mid-year but that is a possibility. We will discuss those things (Monday night).”

SEC: Vandy needs last-second shot, South Carolina upset

(AP photo)

A mixed bag for SEC basketball on Monday. Vanderbilt needed a late shot to beat Oregon State in New Jersey tournament. The Commodores are struggling without the services of center Festus Ezeli. Meanwhile, out in Maui, Tennessee gave a respectable performance before losing to Duke.  In Kansas City, Mark Fox’s young Georgia team took it on the chin from California. And Darrin Horn continues to struggle as South Carolina lost at home to Tennessee State.

As for football, ex-Florida coach Urban Meyer denies stories saying he has all but signed on the dotted line to be the next coach at Ohio State. And, predictably, Vanderbilt coach James Franklin did not take well to Tennessee coach Derek Dooley telling his team Saturday night that the Vols always beat the (expletive deleted) out of Vandy.

All three said yes a win over the Vols, breaking the 26-year losing streak to the neighbor to the south, would salvage something from this disappointing season. Gametime Saturday is 12:21 p.m. and will be televised by the SEC Network.

Here are the videos.

Eddie Sutton says he was “set up” at Kentucky

(Kansas City Star photo)

Former Kentucky coach Eddie Sutton tells Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star that he was “set-up” at UK in the incident that led to the program being replaced on probation and Sutton being dismissed as coach.

In a nice feature story entitled “Eddie Sutton: A country song kind of basketball life,” one of the game’s best coaches tells Kerkhoff:

“When that happened, it was a set-up,” Sutton said. “Who would send money like that? And an overnight package somehow opens up? You need a crowbar to open those things.”
