Five quick notes/impressions and video from the John Calipari media opportuniy:
- The could said he would talk about the entire signing class at the end of the early period, so there were no questions or answers about Alex Poythress, who signed with UK on Thursday afternoon. Poythress joins a class that already included Willie Cauley and Archie Goodwin, not to mention transfer Ryan Harrow.
- Calipari said that he will probably start Doron Lamb, what with the Cats headed to Lamb’s hometown of New York next Tuesday to play Kansas. The coach had indicated last week that he might split the fifth starting spot between Darius Miller and Lamb. Cal said today Lamb’s status as starter could change, but that the sophomore had been putting in extra work, of late.
- The coach said that after looking at video of the 85-point win over Morehouse that the team started right, the defensive intensity was “terrific,” the guys ran wide on offense, and the bench did a good job. What, you thought he would find bad stuff in an 85-point victory?
- Said the team hasn’t practiced “massaging” the ball, or milking the clock. He sticks to his statement that 60 to 80 teams could beat UK. That is, however, down from the “maybe a 100” teams he was saying at the SEC Media Day.
- Calipari said Marquis Teague is ahead of John Wall and Brandon Knight in the unselfishness department, but Teague is more of a classic point guard than his two predecessors. For my money, with the scorers on this team, it benefits more from a classic point guard.
Here’s the video of the first five minutes.
