LSU’s day-game record and other notes

Some LSU notes:

  • Saturday’s 12:21 p.m. ET start is the earliest at Tiger Stadium since the 2008 season opener against Appalachian State was moved up to 10 a.m. because of Hurricane Gustav.
  •  Over the last 51 years, LSU’s home day record is 24-25-3.
  • Kentucky is 5-22-1 against LSU in Baton Rouge, and has lost four of last five.
  • LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee on playing a team like Kentucky, which is a 30-point underdog on Saturday: “We know they can ruin our season very easily.”
  • West Virginia outgained LSU 533-366 last Saturday in LSU’s 47-21 win in Morgantown. WVU quarterback Geno Smith threw for a school-record 463 yards.
  • West Virginia turned it over four times, while LSU did not turn the ball over.
  • LSU’s Morris Claiborne returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, the longest by a Tiger since Eric Martin returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score against UK in 1981.
  • Les Miles on LSU’s success as a road team: “We’re a damn good football team. That’s what makes us a good road team.”
  • LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu was named the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week after forcing two turnovers in the win over West Virginia. Mathieu had a fumble recovery and an interception.
  • After serving a three-game suspension, LSU receiver Russell Shepard caught one pass for 16 yards against WVU. He also had one carry for three yards.
  • LSU’s Brad Wing punted six times for a 48.7-yard average with no returns.
