Video: Joker Phillips meets the media in Louisville

Back from Louisville where I attended the Jefferson County UK Alumni Luncheon at the Galt House. This video is part I of Joker Phillips talking to the media before the luncheon.

He talks here about where his team stands just eight days away from the opener against Western Kentucky on Sept. 1.

He says the mock scrimmage on Tuesday night was the team’s pre-season game. He says it is amazing how far Morgan Newton has come since the end of his freshman year and the end of the bowl game last year. He also talks here about Western back Bobby Rainey.

In a bit of news, Phillips said that Stuart Hines did some conditioning on Tuesday night and “we think he’ll make it” to the opener against WKU. The starting offensive guard has been out with a sprained knee.

Spotlighting UK fans on twitter: @KevinWFaris

The UK fan on twitter we spotlight today is Kevin Faris. His handle is @KevinWFaris. His tag line reads: “I’m a high school English teacher, Ace Weekly writer, and co-creator of Harper Lee Faris. I’m also an above average husband to Amber.”

Kevin has 6,167 tweets to his credit, and in full disclosure, he has written about me in Ace Weekly when I made the mistake of accurately describing criticizing a popular UK fan sports blog. But we’re letting bygones be bygones, and besides it is true that Kevin and I have used the direct message component of twitter to debate other sports and journalistic topics.

A recent Kevin tweet: “As a UK fan, UK v. Anyone is a more important game, for me, than any Duke v. UNC game. Rivalries are mostly regional.”

Here is Kevin’s submitted bio info:

I’m originally from Frankfort but have lived in Lexington since I graduated from Centre College in 1996 and, after teaching English for eight years at Paul L. Dunbar, am currently the Assistant Principal at Elkhorn Middle School in Frankfort. I am a contributing writer for Ace Weekly, which allows me to vent about UK when 140 characters is not enough. I have a very loving and understanding wife (our first date was a UK basketball game) and a beautiful 13 month old daughter, Harper Lee, who I wanted to name John Wall Faris if she had been a boy, but the wife said no.

Reactions to Pat Summitt’s Tuesday announcement

(AP photo)

The big and sad story on Tuesday was Tennessee’s announcement that legendary women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. Summitt had given an interview to the Knoxville News-Sentinel, complete with video, on Monday night only to have the story leak Tuesday when Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports reported that former UT players had been told to come back to Knoxville for the announcement.

The KNS story has the heartbreaking details. Among them:

No matter how grim the prognosis, Summitt seems relieved to have a definitive answer. Small wonder, considering how low she felt at times last season. She confessed to not being as confident on the court and second guessing some of her decisions.

“There were some mornings I would wake up and think I don’t even want to go in,” she said. “That didn’t last long but it was like ‘What’s wrong with me? What’s going on with me?’ “

Cab driver arrested in death of Bama offensive tackle

Aaron Douglas

Aaron Dougas

You may remember the death of Alabama offensive tackle Aaron Douglas, a transfer from Tennessee, who died at a party near Jacksonville, Florida on May 11. An arrest has been made in the case. Police have charged cab driver Rodney Young Odum with manslaughter and the sale and delivery of a controlled substance. According to police, Odom transported Douglas to Fernandina Beach on May 11. Douglas death was ruled as a drug overdose.

Alabama coach Nick Saban said Tuesday: “Nothing can erase the pain of what happened with Aaron. It was tough on our team when you lose a comrade and lose someone that’s a part of your team. Certainly I think that at least now the person who did the wrongdoing is being held accountable for it, which is a positive thing. But nothing can really make that wrong right.?It is good that maybe this person will be convicted and not be able to do this type of stuff to other young people.”

Video: Joker Phillips after tonight’s dress rehearsal

After tonight’s dress rehearsal/mock scrimmage at Commonwealth Stadium, Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips told the media that things went well. The team will be off tomorrow for the first day of classes. One bit of news: Phillips said that Mark Crawford would probably be held from the first game. The senior defensive tackle is still working to try and get back in the coach’s good graces.

Apparently Billy Gillispie didn’t learn his lesson

Some guys never learn, and it looks like Billy Gillispie is one of those guys.

The former Kentucky coach was notorious for not getting along with people during his two-year blip in Lexington.

Now, according to the web site Sports By Brooks, the same thing is happening in his new job at Texas Tech.

Since Gillispie was named Texas Tech coach four months ago, several basketball staffers have left the program. Included in those defections is well-respected Red Raider trainer Jon Murray, whose 13-year Tech tenure included the Bob and Pat Knight years.
