Card Chronicle looks into its UK-U of L crystal ball

Mike Rutheford of the Card Chronicle blog has peered into his crystal ball and mapped out a 6-6 record for the Louisville football team. He thinks Charlie Strong’s second club will go 3-4 in the Big East.

And Mike has been just one game off, either way, in each of the last three Cardinal seasons.

But which team does he think will win the Governor’s Cup?

His prediction is short and (for one side) sweet.

Kentucky men’s soccer jumps to No. 21 in polls

From UK: After posting a pair of wins on opening weekend, including a 2-1 comeback victory over No. 9 Michigan, the Kentucky men’s soccer team has moved up to No. 21 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association top-25, released Tuesday afternoon. Kentucky (2-0-0) bounced into the top-25 in the latest NSCAA poll, also moving to No. 29 in the College Soccer News top-30, released on Sunday night.

The Wildcats advanced in the polls courtesy of a pair of wins, including a 2-0 result over Dayton in the season lidlifter on Friday night. In a match-up with Michigan on Sunday, UK fell into an early 1-0 hole in the second half, before mounting a furious rally that included 13 shots. Sophomore Tyler Riggs came off the bench in both UK wins to net three goals, including both second-half goals in the upset win over Michigan.

UK has been led offensively by Riggs through the first two games, netting three goals on six shots, including five shots on goal. C.J. Tappel netted a goal and added an assist in the season opener, with Charles Pettys assisting on both goals in the Dayton win. In goal, Tyler Beadle has saved four shots in two games, allowing only one goal for a 0.50 goals-against average.

Pizza to blame for South Carolina quarterback’s crash

Andrew Clifford

Andrew Clifford

Andrew Clifford, a backup quarterback at South Carolina, will be out two-to-three weeks after being injured in a moped crash, according to TV station WIST. Clifford was driving the moped while carrying a pizza, said South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier.

Clifford is USC’s third-string quarterback behind Stephen Garcia and Conner Shaw. He played in all of two games last season for the SEC East champs.

According to the school was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

On the other hand, he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Clifford was found unconscious and later received stitches.

Maybe he needs to take scooter lessons from Tom Hanks. And Cal hopes the pizza wasn’t Papa John’s.

A look at college football games on TV this week

The Legends of the Fall are returning. College football is back. To be accurate, our national pasttime returns Thursday night, the joy continuing on through Friday and Saturday.

Opening night is highlighted, at least in these parts, with an ESPNU doubleheader of Murray State-Louisville, followed by Kentucky-Western Kentucky.

I’ve put together a TV chart,  plus a look at five must-see games this first weekend.

  • Boise State at Georgia – ESPN has this one at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Boise State is a top five pre-season pick, while most believe Georgia will bounce back from last year’s 6-7 record. Site is Georgia Dome.
  • LSU vs. Oregon – Not sure why Disney decided to put these two games head-to-head. While Boise-Georgia is on the World Wide Leader, LSU-Oregon is on ABC at 8 p.m. Saturday. LSU has taken some off-the-field hits, but still has national title-type talent. Site is Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
  • South Florida at Notre Dame – NBC has this game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Skip Holtz, the South Florida coach, returns to South Bend, where father Lou led the Irish to its last national title.
  • TCU at Baylor – This is a Friday night special, 8:00 on ESPN. TCU has lost some talent from last year’s Rose Bowl-winning team, and could have its hands full in Waco.
  • East Carolina vs. South Carolina – Charlotte plays host to this 7 p.m. game Saturday on Fox Sports. South Carolina is defending SEC East champ and is my pick to repeat. But something tells me Gamecocks could have some trouble with ECU.

BBL: UK-Kernel controversy; Belittling Rupp task force

DeWayne Peevy

Big Blue Links and notes for Tuesday:

- UK associate athletics director DeWayne Peevy has “punished” the UK’s student newspaper the Kentucky Kernel for having the gall to check with two students to confirm rumors they were joining the basketball team as walk-ons. This was done before the students were officially announced as athletes by the school. As punishment, the Kernel is being banned from select player interviews being held today.

SEC: No decision on Bama quarterback; LSU loses lineman

SEC links for Tuesday:

- Game Week and Alabama has still not decided on a starting quarterback. Sophomore A.J. McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims are bracketed at No. 1. Nick Saban says both will play. He’s not saying who will play first.

LSU has lost senior offensive guard Josh Dworaczyk, the Tigers’ most experienced offensive lineman, to an apparent knee injury and will have surgery within the next two weeks.
