When Kentucky football makes stopping the run one of its main defensive goals for 2011, the challenge starts with the very first game. Western Kentucky happens to boast one of the best running backs in all of college football. His name is Bobby Rainey, and last year he rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns against the Cats in Commonwealth Stadium.
As a whole his junior season, Rainey rushed for 1,649 yards and 15 touchdowns. This followed his sophomore campaign in which the 5-foot-8, 205-pound product of Griffin, Georgia rushed for 939 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 6.5 yards per pop.
In last year’s UK-WKU game, Rainey produced six runs of 10-or-more yards. He ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run in the game’s first 2:13 to give the Hilltoppers a 7-0 lead. Here’s an interesting stat: Rainey gained 141 yards on 12 carries when the down-and-distance was 1st-and-10. So 141 of his 184 yards came in that situation.
Here are a couple of looks at how Rainey did game-by-game last season.
