SEC links for Friday:
- NCAA visits Baton Rouge to have a chat with LSU about Willie Lyles, reports Glenn Guilbeau of the Shreveport Times. “LSU defensive line coach Brick Haley was with Lyles at Clear Springs High in League City, Texas, in the spring of 2010, according to a Foxsports.com report. Linebacker Trevon Randle of Clear Springs High signed with LSU last February,” writes Guilbeau.
- Gene Chizik pushed the wrong button at the wrong time with the NCAA, says Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News. The Auburn coach asked the NCAA why it had not announced it was finished with its investigation into the school’s football program. The NCAA said it wasn’t finished.
- Joe Medley of the Anniston Star writes that Chizik’s comments strain the relationship between Auburn and the NCAA. Medley says it was “off-field gaffe to rival any Les Miles on-field fumble.”
- Arkansas had the most selections on this year’s coaches’ pre-season All-SEC teams, says Mr. SEC. There were 14 Razorbacks chosen. Kentucky was next-to-last with three. Tennessee was last with just two picks.
- With Washaun Ealey being dismissed from team and Caleb King turning up academically ineligible, Robert Samuel is being moved back to running back, reports Seth Emerson of the Columbus Ledger-Enqurier. Samuel redshirted as a linebacker last year at Georgia.
- South Carolina shows off its new football uniforms, reports the AP. Don’t know if the Gamecocks held their unveiling in a theater.
- Robbie Andreu of the Gainesville Sun picks six Florida football players he believes are ready for breakout seasons. One is Trey Burton, the Gator who scored six touchdowns against Kentucky last year. Burton did that at quarterback. Now, he’s a fullback.
- Coaches are debating the merits of summer recruiting, writes Andrew Shain of The State. “They need to open up the April period so, in April, we know who to go see in July,” Louisville coach Rick Pitino said during this week’s Nike Peach Jam all-star tournament in North Augusta.
- Former Tennessee wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson is in trouble again, reports the Palm Beach Post. After playing last year at a junior college, Richardson is arrested for not appearing in court.
- After making this year’s College World Series, Vanderbilt’s pitching is up in the air for next season, reports Jeff Lockridge of the Tennessean. “Of the SEC record-setting 12 Commodores selected in the June draft, Corbin lists four of his underclassmen pitchers and two 2011 signees as being undecided when it comes to turning pro or staying to school.”
