Rick Minter’s Rex Ryan connection

My friend John Herndon points out that when Rick Minter was the head coach at Cincinnati, he once employed a defensive coordinator named Rex Ryan.

The current New York Jets coach was the Bearcats defensive coordinator in 1996-97. In fact, Ryan was the DC when Cincinnati beat Kentucky 24-3 in 1996. Joker Phillips was on that Kentucky staff. And Phillips is expected to hire Minter to the UK staff on Tuesday.

Cincinnati went 6-5 in ’96 and 8-4 in ’97, with a trip to the Humanitarian Bowl, before Ryan departed to become the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma under John Blake. When Blake was fired, Ryan took a job as defensive line coach with the Baltimore Ravens.

Of course, Ryan started his coaching career as an assistant with Roy Kidd at Eastern Kentucky in 1987. He was defensive coordinator at Morehead from 1990-93 before joining his dad, Buddy Ryan, with the Arizona Cardinals.
