Trey Burton on 11-yard TD Pass, gets past UK

With the magic of TiVo, went back and watched Trey Burton’s six touchdowns — all six — on Saturday night to see what exactly went wrong for the Kentucky defense.

Burton touchdown No. 1 — Florida at UK 11-yard line, first-and-goal.

  • Burton lines up in wildcat as quarterback out of shotgun. He has one back immediately to his right, and one back directly behind the left tackle. There are two wide receivers to the right, one to the left. In what appears to be nickel coverage, UK has two linebackers, both playing four yards off the line of scrimmage. Burton takes the snap and fakes handoff to back who is heading toward left end. A huge hole opens up the middle and Burton follows it in. UK’s linebackers crossed on the play. Qua Huzzie, playing for the suspended Danny Trevathan, takes the fake and ends up on the wrong side of the play. Ronnie Snead tried to jam the line, but couldn’t plug the hole. That left no one on quarterback and Burton scores easily. Florida leads 7-0 with 11:09 left in first quarter.
Burton touchdown No. 2 — Florida at UK 11-yard line, first-and-10.
  • John Brantley is at quarterback with one back beside him with Burton lined up behind the right tackle. One wide receiver lines up in slot on right hash, with another just off the hash. There is no receiver out wide on that side. The slot receiver runs a bit of a pick off the line. The wide receiver just off the hash runs a cross which opens up the right flat.  It’s a pass play and UK safety Mychal Bailey is caught too fair inside. All this leaves the flat wide open for Burton. Brantley hits him easily. Bailey can’t get out wide fast enough and Burton scores. Florida leads 14-0 with 2:40 left in first quarter.
Burton touchdown No. 3 — Florida at UK 10-yard line, second-and-eight.
  • Burton is again quarterback in the wildcat, with one back to the right and one back behind left tackle. Two wide receivers to the left, one to the right. Burton takes shotgun snap and fakes handoff to left, then weaves up the middle through traffic. UK has three linebackers, but one takes the slot receiver to the opposite side, the left. Linebacker Danny Trevathan comes hard on right side, but overruns just a little, and can’t corral Burton as he’s going by. Trevathan who has a broken bone in his hand, tries an arm tackle to no avail at the 8-yard line. Mychal Bailey gets blocked out of the play by Florida’s Thompson, the wide receiver. That leaves the right corner open and Burton scores his third touchdown. Florida leads 27-7 with 9:56 left in third quarter.

Burton touchdown No. 4 — Florida at UK 9-yard line, second-and-five.

  • Burton at quarterback again, with one back to right and another behind the right tackle. There are two wide receivers right and one to the left. This time Burton takes snap and fakes hand-off up the middle. Kentucky is in a nickel defense and Winston Guy comes up to be third linebacker before the snap. Defensive end DeQuin Evans, lined up on UK’s left side, goes hard after fake handoff, and leaves the right corner open. Linebacker Ronnie Snead comes up to line and gets caught in the wash. Burton goes right, takes advantage of blocks on side receivers on that side, and Burton has his fourth score. Florida leads 34-14 with 1:20 left in third quarter.
Burton touchdown No. 5 — Florida at UK 3-yard line, second-and-goal.
  • Burton is quarterback, with one back to right and one behind left tackle. Two wide receivers to left, one to the right. Burton fakes handoff to left and goes up the middle, and just runs linebacker Ronnie Snead into the end zone. Safety Winston Guy came up to line for the run stop, but was ineffective. Florida leads 41-14 with 13:11 left in fourth quarter.
Burton touchdown No. 6 — Florida at UK 7-yard line, second-and-goal.
  • Burton is at quarterback, but under center. Backs are lined up in a traditional I-formation, with one wide out on each side. Burton fakes handoff to tailback who is going left, then takes it on a bootleg to right side. Martavius Neloms is corner covering receiver on right side. At snap of ball, Neloms leaves his receiver and charges to the line. But Neloms bites on the fake and is totally out of position, leaving that corner wide open for Burton who is already going by. Winston Guy is safety on that side, but he takes three steps to the left, realizes what’s happening and reverses field. He gets to Burton at three-yard line, goes for Burton’s ankles, and clips him. Still, Burton keeps his balance well enough to hit the pylon for his sixth touchdown. Florida leads 48-14 with 6:38 remaining.
