Chip Cosby of the Herald-Leader on UK linebacker/defensive end Ridge Wilson:
But Wilson’s early progress was derailed when he was charged with fourth-degree assault for punching a woman in the face last September. Wilson saw his Wildcat career flash before his eyes, but then-UK Coach Rich Brooks, citing Wilson’s previous track record as a solid citizen, reinstated him to the team.
Wildcat Blue Blog on Marquis Teague:
The future of the 2011 class takes a big step forward when Marquis Teague makes his college decision known. He will make his decision at 1:30 PM Thursday and this has evolved into a Kentucky vs Louisville decision. Now that Michael Chandler has de-committed from the Cardinals. Pitino desperately needs a win in the recruiting department. Getting Teague will obviously get Calipari further toward a monster 2011 class, but it has become apparent that the top talent in the 2011 class is actively seeking out Calipari and making their pitches to be recruited.
Straitpinkie on UK recruiting suspense:
With the upcoming decisions of Marquis Teague, Terrence Jones, and CJ Leslie, I think that predictability is about to go out the window and those those gluttons for surprise are about to get their fix. Over the next two to three weeks, I expect all three of these prospects to make public commitments with UK prominently involved, and when they step to the podium, I think you are going to have people in the know and out of the know guessing multiple ways and potentially even throwing their arms up in the air and saying “I have no idea”.
Ryan Clark of the Kentucky Enquirer on Marquis Teague:
That brings us to Thursday, when we are supposed to hear of the decision of 2011 point guard Marquis Teague of Indianapolis. A bit of history here: UofL set its sights on Teague way back in 2009 or 2008, and they began their recruiting push at that time, even hiring one of his coaches to their staff. Teague is generally regarded as not only the best point guard in the class, but possibly the best player, behind only UK commit Michael Gilchrist. For two seasons now, the Cards have displayed mediocre point guard play, only to point to the future and say Teague is on the way (which, by the way, I’d like to point out that Teague is also, in all probability, a one-and-done player).
Jody Demling of the C-J on Terrence Jones:
Portland, Ore., forward Terrence Jones said a few things have drawn him to looking closer at the University of Kentucky basketball program during his recruiting process. The 6-foot-9 Jones said the fans and “the dedication by the players and fans,” appear to be among the best in the nation and “coach (John) Calipari wants to win.”
Brett Dawson of the Courier-Journal on UK tight end Nick Melillo:
When Nick Melillo began his college football career in 2007 at Lindenwood University, he vowed that his stay in NAIA would be temporary. And looking at him now – all 6feet2, 235 pounds of him penciled in atop the University of Kentucky depth chart at tight end – it seems reasonable to think the former Trinity star always had his sights set on NCAA Division I football.
Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger on Shane McCord:
He was a two-time all-state selection and ranked as one of the top 30 players in Georgia based on his high school senior season. Shane McCord came to Kentucky expecting to be a big-time contributor on the defensive line – he had 24 quarterback sacks his junior and senior seasons and had 18 tackles for loss as a senior despite being slowed by a knee injury. Yet in three years at Kentucky, he’s never started a game and has only 21 total tackles – and no quarterback sacks.
Nick Craddock of the Kentucky Kernel on UK’s last line of defense:
One potential candidate to emerge from a secondary that lost two key cogs to graduation in likely NFL draft pick and cornerback Trevard Lindley and safety Calvin Harrison, is junior-to-be Winston Guy, now in his second-year at free safety after converting from cornerback. “Winston (Guy) has a lot of potential, but potential means you haven’t done it yet,” Phillips said. “We think (Guy) could be a big-time player for us, and we expect Winston Guy to be one of our leaders on defense also because he’s been around here a long time.”
Aaron Smith of the Kernel on UK baseball’s need for pitching:
Meyer’s absence is still a big blow to UK, who also lost projected starter James Paxton before the season. Now, the Cats will be sending at least two pitchers to the mound every SEC series who they wouldn’t have expected to before the season began. In his last outing before being diagnosed with the illness, Meyer showed his potential dominance, shutting out Alabama through the first five innings.
Eric Lindsey of Cat Scratches writes on UK gymnast Whitney Rose:
One run, one vault, one landing. That’s all Whitney Rose gets. That’s the only chance she will have to represent the Kentucky gymnastics team. As the lone athlete to qualify for nationals, Rose will have the honor — or burden — of carrying the Wildcat torch in this weekend’s NCAA Championships. UK failed to qualify as a team after finishing fifth at the NCAA Lexington Regional, but Rose qualified on the vault with a 9.9 performance two weekends ago in Memorial Coliseum.
Aaron’s UK Football Blog has an update on UK lineman Dave Ulinski.
