Media Approval Ratings: Dick Vitale

Dick Vitale

With conference basketball swinging into gear, we move the Media Approval Ratings to the men and women who bring us the games. That means broadcasters, as in play-by-play broadcasters and color analysts. With ESPN handling the honors for Tuesday night’s Kentucky-Florida tilt inside the O-Dome, we start with WWL’s lead analyst, the now Hall of Famer Dick Vitale.

What say you on Dicky V, thumbs-up or thumbs-down?

Maybe there is no middle ground on Dickie V., but I am a fan. His schtick can get annoying, but I think it arises from a genuine love of the game. As a fan whose appreciation of college basketball basically mirrors the ESPN era, it is hard to for me to imagine the sport without him.

Who are these 57% voting him thumbs up? Are you kidding?

Vitale might be the most 2 faced commentator on TV. He gave Kentucky fans hell when Tubby left saying that we ran him off and now when Ky is top five it’s, “slam bam stuff a renno.” Vitale has one ship and that’s the Dukees and the next ship is whoever is ranked in the top five.

God help me, I love Dickie V. I can’t help it. Sure he gets tiresome (especially when it’s not your favorite team he’s gushing about.) Sure, he’s over the top — way over the top. But dang it, his enthusiasm is contagious. Like Alex said — I can’t imagine college basketball and ESPN with out him.

Well, you learn that if you watch ESPN during college basketball season, you have to put up with “Dicky V.” Yes, he is full of enthusiasm, but I think he is overrated, and I give him a thumbs down. IF we can get the sync together, we’ll be watching the game, and listening to our own Tom Leach, and Mike Pratt. Now, THERE’s an exciting team to listen to when they are calling a game!

Dick talks about everything BUT the game he is calling — AND he is terribly biased towards the ACC — especially his beloved Blue Devils…they don’t call him Dukie V for nothing…

I don’t care what team is playing, if Duke Vitale is calling the game, he will mention Duke multiple times before the game is over. He can’t help it. Dukie V is tremendously biased.
