Video: Calipari responds to Knight’s calling out

Three notes from John Calipari’s meeting with media before Kentucky takes on Austin Peay on Saturday at Rupp Arena:

  • 1. Before Calipari met with the media, UK sports information director DeWayne Peevy told the media that Calipari would address Bob Knight’s comments from the night before. But Peevey wanted to “clear up” a couple of items of misinformation. He said that UMass was never on probation after Calipari coached there. And that the NCAA ruling on Memphis is under appeal.
  • 2. When Calipari did meet with us, he tried as best he could to shrug off Knight’s comments. He said that he and his staff even went to Lubbock and spent time at a Texas Tech practice and how helpful that experience turned out to be. He talked about his respect for Knight and his coaching accomplishments. It was a “take the high road” response with a dash of “he’s been nice to me” thrown in.
  • 3. Cal was asked a couple of Kngiht follow-ups and deflected both with a quick “next question.” He spent the rest of the time talking about how Saturday would be a tough game, and how badly his team has practiced this week. The team backed that up by saying one day Calipari allowed them to practice as a group on their own, without the head coach’s supervision. It didn’t get so well. Josh Harrellson said the team “went wild.” When Calipari saw the tape he hit the roof. On a scale of 1-10, Calipari’s anger was a “10,” said Eric Bledsoe. (That might have been Calipari’s real reaction to Knight’s comments, but he ain’t saying.)

When will tipton stop asking the stupid questions? TWICE, if I am recognizing that voice correctly, Coach Cal had to say “next question.” Always stirring the pot is tipton. I wonder what skeletons he has in his closet that need to be exposed?

Hmmmm, didn’t that Bobby guy get fired from a coaching job???!!!! Who is he to judge. And, for him to say these things that he knew would be picked up by the press and over-exposed…I can’t say that I have any respect for Mr. Bobby what’s his name!!!!! A has-been. He’s just an old, bitter, bellowing idiot. GO FISHING Mr. Bobby what’s your name and stay off TV!

    Same old Calspeak

    Chance,

Explain yourself. Classic cut and run from an ignoramus, Chance. I like facts. Give me some. Why does no one ask Roy Williams or Bill Self these questions? Cal has zero infractions while Pitino, Williams and Self do. I wish I could explain the double standard. Chance, you help enable falsehoods. Few bricks shy of a load.

Upon hearing Bobby Knights comments concerning John Calipari, one word kept repeating in my head, “why?”. When you consider the laundry list of accusations that have been cast at Knight over his coaching tenure, all of which he claims innocence, begs the question why he wouldn’t extend Calipari the same courtesy. Calipari was never implicated in either transgression at UMASS or Memphis, so one must wonder what prompted the comment. Does coach Knight really want us to question the integrity of a man who was never implicated for any wrong doing. If so, should we follow the same logic and condemn Knight for every allegation that has been attached to him? Also, would these comments have been made if Kentucky were 5-5, as Calipari would like his team to believe, and not 10-0 and ranked 3rd in the country?
It appears to me that instead of calling other coaches integrity and ethics into question for media attention, he should be spending more time looking in the mirror.

Jerry, don’t forget about Calhoun at UConn. When’s that investigation going to be over?

  7. 7 tigerton1 December 18, 2009 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm

    Still mentioning UMass, geez!

  8. 8 WelcometoReality December 18, 2009 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm

Kentucky fans dont live in the real world. He may not have been found guilty at the two universities, but who was in charge during the time he was there?
I know… it was just coincidence, that he left both of them right before the NCAA found them guilty.
You sold your soul to the devil and one day he will bite.

“welcome”, thanks for your expert opinion. Now go lurk on someone elses blog.

The real reality here is that Cal has done nothing to us yet, and the only reason there are so many haters is because people see us as a threat. It’s just natural fandom for the haters to come out and this is what they use as thier fire power

    Beautiful, Jerry….just beautiful.

  12. 12 Chance December 18, 2009 5:30 pm at 5:30 pm

    Jerry – Let me guess…..you’re a UK fan…right?

While Calipari is your HC get use to defending him….because that’s all you’ll do.

    Open your eyes!!!

  13. 13 Chance December 18, 2009 5:32 pm at 5:32 pm

You know what’s funny? How much UK fans sound like just like Memphis or UMASS fans, when Calipari coached there.

  14. 14 Rambler1997 December 18, 2009 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm

So what?We will defend him strongly. He has endeared himself to the fans here.We even defended Pitino after he left right up till he took the job at the filthy cards.Cal has done nothing that can be proved and I doubt that he has anything to do with either situation. If dirty was the way he played he would know better than to come to Kentucky now.Oh we’ve had our past indescretions but our compliance people are the best in the NCAA.Sandy Bell stays on top of things like no other and its well known. If he wanted to play that way he’d know it would be tough here.So why go to the university with the toughest compliance dept. in the NCAA if you want to play dirty? You people have nothing on Calipari you tried your best give it a break.

  15. 15 Chance December 18, 2009 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm

    CLASSIC!!!!

  16. 16 Jerry December 18, 2009 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm

Again I renew my call for facts. Fact: Calipari is the one who turned in Marcus Camby when he found out about the improprieties. Fact: It was the NCAA Clearinghouse who OK’d Rose to play. Tell how Calipari is at fault here. Facts please.

    Cal has zero infractions.
    Roy Williams has infractions.
    Rick Pitino has infractions.
    Calhouns program under scrutiny.
    Bill Self under scrutiny.

I embrace the hate. It smells and looks at lot like fear. So keep yappin’ Chance. It puts a smile on my face.

Thanks for the videos John. Good to see.

If the voice with the negative questions really was that of Jerry Tipton, then that explains (again) why I won’t have anything to do with the LHL.

  18. 18 David December 18, 2009 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm

Everyone, please quit picking on Chance. He’s obviously slow, and isn’t up to it. The best approach is, “Thanks Chance, Good job Chance, keep working Chance”.

  19. 19 Jon December 18, 2009 7:02 pm at 7:02 pm

Nice Poll Results on Pot calling the kettle black. You could argue that Bob Knight is a jerk, but he is the cleanest coach in the history of the NCAA. Guy doesn’t cheat…the fact that 47% of the people responded that way is a joke.

  20. 20 Jerry December 18, 2009 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm

You’re doing fine, Chance! Keep up the good work, Chance! Chance, you are special!

  21. 21 King December 18, 2009 8:04 pm at 8:04 pm

Nothing like a run at the title to bring out the green eyed monster. It’s funny how Booby didn’t mention Kelvin’s role in bringing down the integrity of college basketball. Go figure. Booby is scared of a run on his record. That’s the whole story here. He knows what Cal has done as a coach. And he’s still very much in his prime with decades to go in coaching if he chooses. At 35 games per year it doesn’t take long to overtake the Boob.

And throwing chairs, choking players, cursing out news people are all things of high integrity Chance. That’s why people say the pot is calling the kettle black. But of course being the mental midget you are I wouldn’t expect you to understand that.

One more thing Chance. 10-0! 10-0! 10-0! What are the Cards doing this year?

  22. 22 kyscot December 18, 2009 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm

jon, knight is talking about integrity, that covers a wide spectrum of discrepencies. to even elaborate integrity and bob knight in the same sentence is ignorance at it\’s best. bobby is a disgrace to collegate basketball.

  23. 23 Peter December 18, 2009 9:44 pm at 9:44 pm

If Calipari were coaching Louisville right now, UK fans would be the ones agreeing with Knight’s comments and wondering when that cheater Calipari is finally going to get nailed by the NCAA.

Admit it Cat fans; you knew he was a controversial coach when you hired him. Don’t pretend to be shocked by all the criticism. You knew it was coming.

  24. 24 King December 18, 2009 10:01 pm at 10:01 pm

We expect it with every UK coach “Peter”. Why wouldn’t we? From the time Rupp started winning until now the media and the jealous fans have never let up on UK despite far more egregious faults at other schools. Tell me, when’s the last time you whined about UCLA winning all those titles using players that were paid to play? You do know the players have admitted it and the NCAA did nothing, don’t you? Look up the name Sam Gilbert in association with UCLA. You “might” learn something but I doubt it. Whiney jealous cry babies never seem to learn anything.

UMass and Memphis both know who their HC was during their erased Final Four runs. That made Calipari immediately attractive to pUKe. After all he fits their pattern for cheating perfectly after old man Rupp, Hall, Sutton, Pitino (certainly cheats on his wife), Tubby was run off cause he wouldn’t cheat and Billy Clyde was to drunk to remember whether he cheated or not. Cheating is an old and well established culture in the Bluegrass. How could anyone expect anything less or more.

  26. 26 Chance December 19, 2009 10:10 am at 10:10 am

I hope UK does bring home the championship banner this year……so I can take bets on how long it will take before its taken away.

Two Final Fours appearances at two different schools….two Final Four appearances stripped away. Coincidence???

    Keep defending him!!!

Still no metion of Roy Williams or Calhoun being dirty. Why the double standard?

Some specialists state that loan aid people to live the way they want, because they are able to feel free to buy necessary things. Furthermore, different banks offer short term loan for all people.
