As promised, we are returning to the Media Approval Ratings.
And as promised, we’re giving you the chance to give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on the print media.
Figured this would be a good week to do it, what with there being no games for a few days. Kentucky doesn’t return to action until Saturday’s matchup with Austin Peay at Rupp. And we’re still a couple of weeks away from the Cats’ Music City Bowl appearance. Remember, that’s Dec. 27 in Nashville.
We’re going to start with approval ratings on the Herald-Leader writers first, starting with me. Then we’ll continue on through the other local writers, state writers, even the blogs, etc.
The plan is to make this a daily feature for the foreseeable future.
My mother always said never put yourself first, but I figured the right thing to do is to put myself out there first.
So here’s your chance to let me have it.
What say you, thumbs-up or thumbs-down?

OF COURSE your rating is 98%!!!! It’s YOUR SITE….however I do agree, you are great…..
Go easy on us when our turn in the barrell comes…

Big Thumbs up from me. You are one of my favorites, John. You manage to walk the line between having the passion of a true UK fan on the one hand, and having that journalistic objectivity when it’s time to criticize. I think your open letter to Mitch Barnhart as the Gillispie house of cards was imploding was a classic. Thanks for all you do.
Mr. Clay: You get a thumbs up from me. The vast majority of your articles are well-reasoned and well-written. Now that doesn’t mean I AGREE with all of them, but that’s got nothing to do with this!! Keep up the good work.
You get a thumbs up in comparision to Jerry Tipton.. He’s the reason I cancelled the newspapers all three of my houses, he gets two thumbs down from me!
Must be raise time at the Herald!!! You got my approval, go ahead and sign yourself up for the Jelly of the Month Club.
Great job Mr Clay, Now BRING ON TIPTON!
You’re ok in my book – Tipton needs to pack his bags.
Thumbs up from me as well, and I would echo the comments from Pete’s post above. You seem to have a real balance in your work, which is much appreciated.
Definitely thumbs up!
What I like: you tell it like it is – your liveblogs are good – interesting writing style – informative reporting during the firing of Gillespie and hiring of Calipari.
My only complaint: you seem to always support fellow writers such as Forde.
Well, as one person said, this isn’t exactly a scientific poll since it is your site, but I have no problem giving an “approval” to you, Mr. Clay. I find your balance appropriate and your articles enjoyable and well reasoned.
Essentially, I enjoy your work more than anyone else at your paper, and your blog is my starting off point every morning I check up on UK.
Which also indicates to me that you work harder than anyone else there too.
Just because it’s my site doesn’t mean you have to give me a thumbs-up. Only reason I went first is because I figured there would be negative comments. I would like to hear more of what you do and don’t like about the blog.
John: I voted to disapprove but I really like you. I just feel that you have an agenda with some of your articles but I do enjoy reading them despite not agreeing with you about 50% of the time. The only HL Writers that will get my approval are Chip Cosby(100%) and Mark Story(80%). THe one I am waiting for is Tipton because he rates(0%) in my book.
John,
Here’s my critique:
Love:
-The videos of postgame player and coach interviews. The news shows only snippets, but you appear to put almost all up in their entirety. Love that. Frankly, I think that effort should be a reporter’s duty, not a columnist’s, but hey, I’m not in the biz.
-The links collections. Always great reading and it saves me from digging around. You and ASoB pretty much cover all my daily sports reading from all over the web.
Could improve:
-I wish there was more commentary from you, rather than just posting of news/links/videos. You write opinion well, and your blog is a great place to offer commentary on topics you don’t cover in print. It seems you rarely give opinions on the topics you post. Odd for a blog.
I voted approve, obviously.
In an effort for constructive criticism, here goes: I too really like the video interviews and link collection. You do a good job of summarizing the links as well. I would be fine with more opinions here.
Although I have only done a few, I really like your live chats and game time chats. Very fun to banter with you and the fans.
It would be great if you had more recruiting news here. I go elsewhere to find it typically, though it often is speculation and guessing (and for a fee that I avoid paying). I don’t know how practicle that is for you, but if you had more recruiting news or links, I would have about everything I needed right here.
I like reading your articles John and I like your links and videos. I enjoy your live blog during UK football games. I disagree with you quite a bit, but you don’t seem to have an agenda the way Jerry does.
Hopefully you’ll let us vote on each television station’s sports reporters and each radio station talk show.
Jimmie, we already did Media Approval Ratings for the local radio talk shows and the TV sports anchors. To see them, and vote, just click on the Media Approval Ratings tag at the top of the post.
