This whole thing is almost Shakespearian. Or at the very least, a Twilight Zone episode. With everyone calling for Hartline’s head, he goes out and plays the half of his career, only to be hurt on a play that should have been blown dead before the ball was snapped. Now all of a sudden we are wringing our hands and the pressure on Brooks escalates to go with a guy who NO REGULAR FAN HAS EVER SEEN THROW A PASS.
What a mess, and what a shame for Mike Hartline.
This is something. I’ve not been a Hartline basher, and regret he has received such a serious injury. I think we would have been in a better position to win, and most likely would have won, the game given the way he and everyone else was playing.
Having said that, looking forward now. John, aren’t I remembering correctly that I saw Andre Woodson’s first start at Auburn a few years ago? Now, it’s possible that we’ll see Newton’s debut here as well?
Pat, you are exactly right. I remember writing that Woodson showed promise. I got back to Lexington the next morning, got into my car at the airport, turned on the radio and heard my friend Tim Woodburn say, “John Clay thinks Andre Woodson showed promise! What’s he been drinking?” True story.
Did I read correctly that “Ashley” thinks that Derek Locke should have been the quarterback in the “Wildcat” for the two-point conversion try? Surely, I am mistaken. Has Locke ever been in the Wildcat qb position?
I am as upset as anyone who “bleeds blue” that we haven’t won more football games, but the people whom I talk with aren’t as down on the coaches as “Ashley” seems to be. Perhaps he/she is “running with the wrong crowd”. Or perhaps he/she needs to go into coaching.
I believe it was proven last season that Randall Cobb, as wonderful and exciting a player as he is, isn’t a full-time SEC quarterback. Perhaps Mike Hartline isn’t either, but he apparently is the best that we have/had? presently. May his recovery be rapid and successful whether he ever plays another down at UK or not.
