If Hartline is out for year, how should UK proceed?

If Mike Hartline is out for the season after his knee injury Saturday at South Carolina, or even if the UK quarterback is out for a significant period of time, how should the Kentucky staff proceed?

I know Hartline is far from perfect, but I really think that he was Kentucky’s best chance to get to another bowl game. I think Brooks will start fidler and try Cobb at the Wildcat more often.

An option-style offense like Florida’s, with Cobb at QB and Locke & Smith at tailback would be very interesting to see.
Also, I’d like to see Cobb drop back to pass from the wildcat formation, then, once containment is broken down, take off for 6.

    John,

I think the best answer is a Newton/Cobb combo, unfortunately that is not one of the choices.

Also, I was disappointed in Joker’s comments after the game. No one wanted to see Hartline injured, but his comments, along with the tone of your article, made it appear that a majority of UK fans wanted this or that somehow through their collective unconcious made it happen.

While I am sure Joker was upset, a better repsonse would have been something along the lines of “we have to prepare. We have to get players ready., etc.” His quote seemed very defeatist. I don’t remember that defeatist tone coming fron the coaching staff when it was revealed that Lindley was out for the game.

Did you see video of Joker? I don’t think he really had a defeatist tone. I think his tone was more of we-have-to-go-to-our-second-best option.

I, too, think the best option is an option-style Randall Cobb formation. Basically, a full-time Wildcat.

Sure, it takes away our best receiver, but it ensures the best athlete on the offense touches the ball every down, instead of whenever the quarterback can get it to him.

We need to remember that Randall Cobb has actually started under center before. And, maybe even more importantly, that we could really use a couple of W’s right now.

Did not see the video, just read the comment in the LHL. In print, it came across as a defeatist tone. I will try to watch the video. Thanks for the heads up.

I trust the coaches to make the best decision. They see all the reps in practice and how each qb responds and makes decisions. Cobb had a great series Saturday, but also caught SC unprepared.
I know a lot of fans are critical of some of the coaches’ decisions on Saturday, especially on the 2 point conversion. But I and other fans have not watched hours of game film on SC and created a detailed scouting report.

After watching the video I just couldn’t understand why people were making an issue about Joker’s comments. But I guess in print without being able to understand the tone, it is understandable…still I don’t think he said anything that was remotely out of line. I would suggest anyone that is bothered by the comments they read to go watch the video.
