John,
Re your bit today about the uncalled for penalties for “celebrations”, please don’t feed more fuel to the fire of the constant racism commentary.
I totally agree with you that most of the calls are totally unnecessary. I recall the one made on Randall Cobb last year which was ridiculous to say the least; however, most calls are made on black players because most players are black. That is a fact of life in football and most other sports today.
I do remember an unsportsmanlike call being made on Tim Tebow. Last year, I do not remember whom Florida was playing, but the game had been won long before (so what else is new?) and Tim was on the side lines. He was doing the “Gator chomp” toward the fans in the stands and the refs made the call. I believe the first and only call of that nature ever called on Tebow according to the announcers.
As I understand the announcers this fall, the powers that be have told the refs to be particularlly watchful for the call. If they don’t – then what happens? I suppose they wouldn’t be asked to ref any more games.
I, for one, am really tired of picking up my newspaper or turning on my computer and reading about racism. I am a KY football, basketball, whatever fan, red, yellow, black or white, and I am tired of constantly hearing about how we all are racists.
Enjoy your columns and read you every day that you are there, and if they ever take away my morning newspaper, life won’t be worth living!
Sincerely, Sue Allen
As long as nobody taunts the other team, why not allow players to party like its 1999 after a score? We are asking players to bottle up their emotions like Deter from the old SNL “Sprockets” skits. Are we getting to the point where we’re going to start penalizing Fans for excessive cheering as well because it is distracting to the other team? I say bring back the Mark Gastineau celebrations of old. Let the Icky’s do their shuffle, the TO’s sign their footballs, the Lambeau’s do their leeping, and the OchoCinco’s do their proposing. What do you think?
